My Stepson wants to join the UK Royal Navy.

He is 19 years old, holds a Thai passport and is about to be naturalised as a British Citizen and get a British Passport.

He is on a 'Public Services' course in the UK, and has been short-listed for the Royal Navy (Marines) application process, deferred until next year once a British Citizen.

He will need officially proof that he does not need to enrol on Thai National Service to be eligible to enrol on any UK military services.

Does anyone have ideas how he could get proof he will not have to enrol for Thai National Service?
He is 19yrs and is included in the Thai Family House Document (Tabien Baan).
He has been in the UK for 8 years.

... We will be going to Thailand for holiday next April.

Any help would be much appreciated.

I am sorry I have no advice to give on how to obtain the required paperwork but would like to wish your son all the best on his endeavours.

Further to my last there was a recruitment Office in London that dealt with foreign applications, I will try and find out their address as they may be able to give advice.

All Thai men must present themselves for the lottery when they turn 21. He is on a tabien ban, he has an ID card, he is in the list. I don't see how he can prove that he is not required to show up for the Lottery draft, even disabled must do so and undergo a medical check.

You might be able to look into getting an exemption. I know legitimate ones that were given when a Thai male returned to Thailand after age 30 (the age limit for mandatory service). I believe it's called a สด9 (in this case since your son's only 19 it may take some "persuading")

that is true, if you remain' out of the country until the age of 30 they may exempt you from service, but thats not really what he is looking for. He is looking for some kind of confirmation from the Thai military that his son is exempt now.

I wish him the best.

It will be good for him to see how a real navy operates in the real word.

Not a navy that is clearly show but without substance. Did they buy those submarimes with the hole in them ?

Good luck to your son. Take care.

I joined the RN at 17 and was the best thing I ever did.

I am not sure but do you not need to be British citizen for 5 years?

He'll love it I am sure.

Can't help on the other but tell him to enjoy HMS Raleigh. Great times with great mates,

From the OP's post his son is actually applying to join the Marines.

A point of Order and History, the Americans have Marines who are a service all on their own, Great Britain have the Royal Marines who are a part of the Royal Navy.

They wear a green beret with a gun and globe badge.

The training is hard but the comradeship is good.

Good luck and I am sure the boy will make it and be a son to be proud of.

I am ex RAF of 25 years.

I know that but all the posts so far assume he's going into the RN. For instance if he's going to be a marine he won't be going to Raleigh but Lympstone for his training

Don't need to be in the UK for a specified time, as you see here, granted asylum 2004, joined RN 2007, convicted of using a warship to smuggle coke 2010, rolleyes.gif
