GUINNESS BOOK OF WORLD RECORDS
Thailand's oldest man to be nominated

The Nation

MAE HONG SON: -- The Mae Hong Son authorities plan to nominate a 119-year old man to the Guinness Book of World Records as Thailand's oldest person.

Governor Narumon Palawat said Wednesday Kamu Tongnumchokdee, an ethnic Karen, has accurate documents that show he is 119. Kamu, a widower, who lives in Muang Pam Ville in Pang Mapha, remains active and fishes for food everyday.

Narumon said Kamu was the country's oldest person and the province would nominate him for the position to the Guinness Book of World Records. Kamu was born on May 8, 1894, has four children, one of whom has passed away, and lives in a simple onestorey house alone with some help from his relatives in the village. Kamu eats a diet of coarse rice and vegetables with chilli dip and fish and is healthy and able to fend for himself.

The governor was speaking after visiting the district, where he gave some money to Kamu and other elderly persons. Two others Karen in the area are also very elderly: Norjordoh Wanapanich is 116 and Normikho Rattanaarayatham is 105.

119....now that is amazing!

Thailand had better be quick though, considering the oldest man now is believed to be only 116 and although there have been other claims none has ever been officially verified to live beyond that age.

And we don't want any 'Kittiratting' where the Guiness Book of Records is concerned. That would be embarrassing.

Sounds great!!!

Would love to see 'Khun Thai' in the Guinness Book of Records.

Well done to you Sir, i think ill miss a few years off that age

So this gentleman took the fast-track to become Khon Thai then? What about all those kiddies in hill tribe areas being considered "alien"; do they have to grow 110+ to become acceptable enough to call Thailand home?

This guy was around before Thailand was Thailand.

I'm surprised he's not 196yrs. old with a Birth Certificate to prove it.

Thailand is already in the Guinness book of records for the country with the biggest number of hubs

This guy was around before Thailand was Thailand.

They don't have to be too old for that to be the case.

I'm surprised he's not 196yrs. old with a Birth Certificate to prove it.

And self-certified by making his X on the certificate.

But seriously, I'm amazed by anyone who reaches even a 100 years old. Just hope I can make it close to 100...or close to 90...or close to ....

Who would want to live that long ?.

They should also nominate that shady monk as the worlds richest monk

He really isn't 119 years old. Just another 20 year old Yaba head who looks like Keith Richards.clap2.gifclap2.gifclap2.gif

If I make 50 I'll be happy.

Has anybody checked the age of some of these Thai generals? Chavalit for a start. They must be over 100

If they last the 5 days they'll be happy.

Always good to see how the Nation articles contextualise a lot of background information and make them relevant to the story.

Sitting here right now with Monte. The world's oldest Guiness Book endorsed bull mastif. He's a mate, dropped in to lunch.

Unlike the Thai gent Monte can't fend for himself at all.

In Swamp Thing years certainly.

In another example, there is a renowned monk living in his own temple in Phuket (Luong Phu Supa) who claims to be 117. He cannot apply to the Guinness Book authorities because he has no birth certificate which is not a rare occurrence in Thailand, especially more than 100 years ago.

I have met him and he has no cars, planes, branded goods of any sort and is just a humble, intelligent devotee of Buddhism who puts his longevity down to only eating nine spoonfuls of whatever he is eating at each meal. And before TV aficionados jump on the bandwagon, the spoons are the normal size and not from mechanical diggers.

This guy was around before Thailand was Thailand.

This guy was 45 years old before Thailand was Thailand...

"He can fend for himself." A trick that most Thais can't do.

Who would want to live that long ?.

Actually many people do. Maybe not you .... but some people actually like their self, and living life also.

Actually, Keith Richards is still very alive and well .... and finally is as old as he's looked for many years.

Who issued the Birth Certificate? - must be some marvelous piece of paper to have survived so long in this climate!

Anything is possible to prove with, ( so called original ) documents !

Sounds great!!!

Would love to see 'Khun Thai' in the Guinness Book of Records.

I think you mean Khon Thai!
