Protesters call on Thai Army to stage 'peaceful coup'

Bottom line is that due to the power of the military it needs to be paid off in some way or else they take matters into their own hands. Those who seem to have fond memories of the junta that took over in the coup of 2006 seem to forget that they were pretty poor at running the country - remember the US$.22billion wiped off the stock market in a single day due to the capital controls imposes in Dec 2006?

As for extra money that found its way to the military there is a useful article here:

By 2009, defense budgets had doubled from $2.4 billion in fiscal 2006 to $4.8 billion in fiscal 2009. During the same period, the budget allocation for internal security rose from $2.2 billion to $3.26 billion as the threat of anti-government street protests rose.

Why does "Mark" need the army to get him elected if he is so good for the country? There will be another election in the not so distant future, everyone who can vote will be able to vote for THEIR government, will they choose your beloved Mark? I doubt it.

Perhaps it is because he refuses to offer populist vote-buying policies that would prove ruinous to the country. Of course you have to be some sort of fascist to suggest that government should be responsible as well as popular, or that there is more to democracy than who gets the most votes.

Fluctuations in the stock market are a poor way of judging damage to a country. At the moment the SET is strong, while millions of tonnes of unsaleable rice mount up and hundreds of billions of baht go to waste buying and storing it. Not to mention the blatant corruption and self-interest of rich politicians making windfall profits on their rent increases.

Which figures BTW make the military budget look like small potatoes.

That would be a somewhat more compelling argument if Abhisit and his government had not adopted Thaksin's so called populist programmes hook, line and sinker - indeed enhanced them.

As for the economic impact of these policies it is absurd to suggest they are ruinous to the country. The numbers simply don't support this.

Irrespective of the state of the economy, should Thailand be a democracy or not?

The argument re the economy is a distraction. There is more to running the country than getting a particular set of stats to line up.

Forced reconciliation will not make Thailand peaceful and tranquil. Perhaps somebody more experienced and less biased than the government and TV posters, has a weather eye on the future. Doesn't sound much like Thailand.

Your 1st statement is a lie.

Your 2nd statement refers to a matter you have refused to discuss. But now, with rice scam losses approaching 1 trillion baht with little or no economic gain, you can explain why thailand needs to borrow B2.2 trillion for infrastructure development (says Yingluk).

You might also choose to comment on responsible government, and the other facets of democracy beyond populism.

Abhisit and the Democrats' populist programme on which they fought the last election was modelled on that pioneered by Thaksin and this is a matter of record. Please do not attempt to reinvent history and please do not call other forum members liars. If you disagree present your evidence and a discussion can be had.

The rice subsidy pledge is certainly flawed but it has a political objective which has to be taken into account. It is foolish to call it a scam though no doubt there are incidental elements of corruption which schemes of this sort are prone to.

The infrastructure development programme is both imaginative and necessary and has wide cross party support.I specifically recall Korn's endorsement. The controversy relates to how it should be financed and unfortunately this has been caught up in the attempts of extreme right wingers to mobilise the courts for political purposes. On the basis of the numbers I have seen the programme is doable through a mixture of self financing and additional borrowings.

Military should be left alone to run its own affaris ,look at other nations UK,US where lying politician get young soldier killed for there own political gain on the world stage, if left to the military we would never had done Iraq 2 would of completed the task on The first 1 but good old politics got involve. In the south The military could sort very quickly but no to much politics, will become like Northern Ireland go on for 30 years,a lot of dead bodies, but if it had been left to the military would have been over much quicker. The Military are loyal to The King and Country and must stay that way,As we should have been to HM The Queen

So logically the UK and US wouldn't have got involved in WW2 because the countries weren't directly threatened.

The military are there to serve the country, but also have an obligation to the head of state to ensure that there remains a country to serve.

Stop comparing Thailand to the first world. A military coup in Thailand just means stopping the naughty boys and girls from going too far. Nothing more, nothing less

Could you clarify 'extreme right wingers'?

Does the term relate to anyone in Opposition to the PTP?

Does 'wide cross party support' include the Opposition parties?

Seeing the PTP version of Democracy in action, I would doubt that the Opposition have even been made aware of the details of Government proposals.

Tell that to the people on the ground in CM - the little people. Families going out of business, market stalls not bothering to open due to lack of visitors (locals), let alone customers. Empty market car parks etc....

The one thing the government can depend on, IMO, is that the people here don't equate the economy with government policies.

Perhaps you can show us Democrat policy to match Yingluk's off-the-cuff remark which elevated the rice subsidy to B20,000/t. Until then H,L&S = BS.

The political objective of the rice scam was to get elected by vote-buying with other people's money. The STATED objective was to raise the income of poor rice farmers, many of whom RENT their land. As there was no rent freeze attached, that small part that reached farmers has been savagely reduced by ~doubled rents, and some of the biggest landowners are PTP MPs, cabinet members and their families. They have derived direct benefit from a hugely expensive policy that has failed in its objectives other than vote-buying, and which continues despite mounting losses. THAT is a scam. When 10% of government expenditure is being wasted, that is certainly causing damage to the country - expect it to continue in the next budget.

The benefits from expensive HSR are certainly imaginary, a completely unnecessary waste with no benefit for the majority of Thais. But even if it was a well planned expenditure, how do you justify spending a trillion on a policy with almost no benefit and then borrowing 2.2 trillion with a 50 year payback for it? that is economic stupidity.

Please stop placing anybody that disagrees with you in pejorative little boxes.

The point of previous coups was to get governments, he'll bent on destroying Thailand OUT. Not to get the Opposition IN.

If PTP were to act like sensible boys and girls, even while flouting parliamentary democracy, then there'd be little argument other than a difference of policies.

But while PTP are acting like out of control school kids, they leave themselves open to requiring a steadying hand.

What was the result of the last coup? Democratic elections which got PTP elected.

You shouldn't have much complaint about that

Er so what is the point? Why have a coup if the Thai people simply re- elect the deposed government or one almost identical to it.A coup only makes sense if the coup makers can enforce policies to their liking. After the last coup an attempt was made with the rigged military backed constitution but with only mixed results. The only effective way to enforce policies would be to end parliamentary democracy altogether.

So what have these coup makers achieved? They have managed to damage and tarnish the institutions they profess to hold dear.Stupid muppets.

My point was simple. A government that goes off the rails is stopped. The people vote for a new government presumably in hope of a better future. Then the new government continues with the same policies.

2 choices - take up the general apathy which appears to characterize Thailand, or continue to try to give governments the chance to act like grown ups?

Are you in favour of out-of-control governments?

What on earth are you going on about?

I lived and worked in Isaan for 18 years, and yes, it is completely unrecognisable in some places from when I first went there. They could keep pumping money in there for 50 years and it still wouldn't get to the level of Bangkok.
