PTT oil slick spreads to Koh Samet beachfront

Terrible pictures from beautiful Samet, a real disaster! Ao Prao is the only beach on the west of the island, but am sure it will also affect all others as Samet is not that big.

Have PTT said what they are doing about it???

I have seen a industrial accident in every country that has any industry, the Thai response is as good as any countries. the beaches can be cleaned, the wild life will survive. Mother nature little friends microbes will eat the oil in the ocean, and in a short time this will all be a memory, as long as the response teams keep working and get the resources needed.

That is a horrible mess and I doubt Thailand has the resources to clean that up by themselves. Hope they request International assistance to those who have the tools though it looks too late. It will take years probably to 'fix' this.

That's a sad picture. This is the first concrete evidence I have seen showing that this looks like a major incident. Has anyone heard what the cause of the leak is? If a P/L has ruptured on its own then PTT has a lot to answer for, if on the other hand this was caused by a vessel anchor then it's a differant story.

Oh dear. Why haven't they been putting booms across the beaches if it was really this bad?

Holy crap, what a disaster!! :-(((

If death penalty could be used for something, this kind of $hit it is. I really wish a real investigation will be conducted and the responsible ones sent to jail, but I am not holding my breath

The kiss of death was the statement from the head honcho yesterday:

"We still have some concern about the chemical being used, even though it is clear that the oil leak will not reach the beaches or coral," said Phuchong Saritsadeechaikol, director of the government's Marine and Coastal Resource Conservation Center in Rayong.

It will take a day or two but we will find the farang that caused this problem. Without a doubt we can hang on on a farang like everything else.

Slick washes up on Samet island

RAYONG: PTT Global Chemical Plc (PTTGC) and at least 300 navy soldiers are cleaning up the damage caused by an oil slick that has polluted Ao Phrao beach on Samet island.

Puchong Saritthichaikul of PTTGC said on Monday thet oil entered the bay and washed up on the beach at Ao Phrao, on the western part of the island, on Sunday night.

The slick has affected the entire beach of the small bay and PTTCG and navy personnel soldiers deployed to the area on Sunday were cleaning it up. It was hoped the clean-up would be complete later on Monday, he told Inside Thailand news programme on FM97.0 radio station.

Clean-up crews were also working to further contain the main slick and prevent it moving to Phae beach on the mainland of Rayong's Phae district, as the wind is moving it in that direction, he added.

Mr Puchong said the slick that washed up on the island is about one-tenth of the 50,000 litres of oil that leaked into the sea on Saturday off the eastern coast in the Map Ta Phut industrial estate in the province.

A Samet park official said tourists were evacuated from Ao Phrao. Other beaches on the island were unaffected, he said.

The oil slick was caused by a leak in a PTTGC pipeline carrying crude being unloaded by an offshore tanker to its refinery about 6.50am on Saturday.

Although some sheen and particles may hit beaches, this incident could have been far worse, but the companies in that area train together for this and were prepared. Anyone with industry experience knows this spill was managed swiftly and thoroughly.

Map Ta Phut and Rayong ports transfer 1000's of tons of dangerous goods between shore and ships everyday, still they do not have anywhere near the equipment and manpower needed if something happens. Wait and see attitude and not at all prepaired.

This time they have called for help from Singapore with equipment and manpower that should have been in place for immediate action, now it will be way to late.

Same thing happend when the large tank blow up in Laem Chabang a few years back. Then they run out of extinguisher foam after an hour and had to send for more, again from Singapore.Wait and see attitude and not at all prepaired.

RPT-Thai oil spill reaches tourist resort

(Reuters) - Crude oil that leaked from a pipeline in the Gulf of Thailand over the weekend has reached a Thai tourist resort, pipeline operator PTT Global Chemical Pcl said on Monday.

Around 50,000 litres of crude oil poured into the sea on Saturday around 20 km (12 miles) off the coast of Rayong, southeast of the capital Bangkok.

"An oil slick has reached Ao Prao beach on Koh Samet island," PTT Global, which estimates that around 5,000 litres remain to be cleaned up, said in a statement.

"This should be the last oil slick that will come to shore. It is stuck in one particular corner of the shore close to some rocks."

Koh Samet, known for its white sandy beaches, is thronged by local and foreign tourists, thanks to its proximity to Bangkok, and is home to several high-end and budget resorts.

The pollution control has about 20 approved chemicals on their list that can be used depending on the environment.

In the modern world with its avaricious apatite for oil such things are inevitable. The real issue here is not with regard to what happened, it is to the way that what happened is being dealt with. Typicaly owing to the potential negative impact this is being played down. There can be little doubt that far in excess of the 50 or 70 tonnes that have been reported are floating around these coastal waters. Here lies the real essence of this culture. They lie, they misrepresent and they make claims without justification. Just another day in Thailand where the uncomfortable truth is swept under the carpet.

Oil spill reaches Samet Island

30211367-01_big.jpg

An oil spill caused by an offshore pipe leak in the Gulf of Thailand has reached Samet Island, a popular tourist destination on the eastern coastline, tourism authorities said Monday.

"The oil has already arrived at Prao Bay on Samet," said Chuchart Oncharoen, Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) director for Rayong province.

Samet Island, situated about 150 kilometres south-east of Bangkok, is a popular weekend getaway for Thais and foreigners living in the capital.

"We’ve had some hotel cancellations on Samet," Chuchart said. "Whether this has a long-term impact on the island depends on how quickly PTT cleans the mess up." The leak sprung Saturday in an offshore pipeline belonging to PTT Global Chemical Public Limited Company, and has released about50,000 litres of oil into the gulf, about 20 kilometres off the coastof Rayong.

The company, with the assistance of the Thai navy, had contained much of the oil spill by Saturday evening, although portions evaded the booms.

PTT Global Chemical is a subsidiary of the PTT PLC, the national petroleum company.

Mr. Zappalot, the picture is not a product of leakage. It is seems like a used oil

Obviously you do not know how raw oil/crude looks like... Black and sticky, ok granted you can mix it up with used oil, but in this case, just see all the pictures and the reports, it is clearly not used oil...

I love the guys from the oil industry.

First, everything is under control.

Then, when oil spills, everything is still under control.

Usually, they are the ones using avatar with a nice mountain landscape in the back.

Just to remember how it was before they mess it up.

Says the guy on the way to the gas pump. Get a life.

How about choosing a different word--" PORTIONS" evaded the booms ????. Some cancellations ????? Looks like 50,000 litres on this beach alone.
