Folks

I am new to this forum so please forgive me if I post this in the wrong place. I am hoping that someone can answer a few questions for me that is very easy to understand. I am aware that this topic has been discussed and I have read replies, however I have become more confused by the more I read due to my lack of knowledge on phones. First of all I am taking my own personal mobile phone and removing my sim card once I arrive in Thailand. Can you please advise me what I need to do now? Please answer in simple steps.

1. Is there a prefix number I can use to get cheap calls when ringing from one mobile phone till another within Thailand?

2.If someone from the UK wants to ring me from a mobile or landline is there a cheap number they can use if I give them my thai number?

3.If I want to ring the UK is there a cheapnumber I can use?

4. When my friend was In thailand he was able to send text messages to UK however he could not send photos why?

I really appreciate it if someone could take the time to answer this query for me. Eddy

Hi Eddy,

The first thing to check is whether your mobile is unlocked or locked to a network in the UK.

If it's locked you'll need to get it unlocked. Your network provider in the UK can unlock it for you ...............for a price.

It's also possible to get a phone unlocked here in Thailand but easier if it's unlocked when you arrive.

The three main networks here are AIS. DTAC and True and sim cards are available 'everywhere'. If you're going to phone the UK from Thailand I would advise getting a True Inter sim card. They cost 50 baht from any 7-11 shop (or at the Airport when you arrive. A credit top up costs 90 baht. If you're using a smart phone you can also buy an add on for internet access.

By using the prefix 0060044******** instead of the +44 you would normally use from abroad you can phone a UK land line for 1 baht (about 2p) per minute and a UK mobile for 6 baht a minute. Phoning mobile to mobile within Thailand costs 1 baht per minute.

There are various options to ring Thailand from the UK. If you're just coming to Thailand for a short period (on holiday) probably the easiest way for somebody to phone you cheaply (on your Thai sim number) is to buy a pre paid calling card which are available from various shops (especially asian) in the UK. That will give a UK number to prefix the Thai number and the calls will then usually cost just 2-3 pence per minute, or less. The minimum charge for a pre paid card is usually £5.

There are also prefix numbers in the UK (such as 'local call') you can register with and use to call Thailand but you would have to pre load your account with credit as well and the minimum is usually £10.

From a BT land line you can also prefix your Thai number with '08448612121' and calls then cost 1p per minute. But be careful, from any other provider, such as Virgin and TalkTalk, it will cost about 4-5 pence per minute.

Your friend probably couldn't text pictures because MMS wasn't set up on his phone. I usually send pictures from my phone via email. It's quicker, easier, more reliable plus I've found I can send better quality pictures (bigger file size).

Have a look at www.localphone.com they are a Sheffield based company, I use them when in the UK, roughly it works like this as I see it but leave the technical stuff to them. I wish to phone my wife here in Thailand. First I register my UK number with localphone and then add a Thai contact number. I am then asked where I am in the UK ( say eg you are in London ) they give me a a London local number to call and that patches me stright through to the wife in Thailand at a local UK rate + about 1.7p per minute. If I move down to Brighton for a week, I change to a local Brighton number, dial that and I am through.

As far as phoning from Thai to the UK it can be done, there is a one off set up and then a monthly charge, have a look at the site see what you think although it might be cheaper phoning the UK with the 0060044 way by the look of it. I usually go to TAT and buy 300 mins for 300bts, a lot of number to push though!

I recommend Localphone as well.

Your friend might not have enabled data services on the SIM if the photos were being sent as MMS or via email? Text messaging doesn't need the data services. You enable it via the SIM provider. Usually easy and takes a few seconds of time.

Hi,

vectone offers a free uk number one can call locally from the uk for landline call cost. you on your side

have to install software on your pc or notebook to receive these calls while you are in thailand and

need probably a headset for your pc or android or iphone cellphone (pc with bluetooth dongle, cost with

bluetooth 5 usd www.aliexpress.com)

http://www.vectonecloud.com/support/making-receiving-calls.aspx

http://www.dialnow.com/ belongs to a chain of resellers

selling the same service, it doesnt give you your own phone number,

but cheap calls to everywhere and has worldwide local acess numbers.

you need to search the internet for a price comparison table if you travel other countries.

the advantage is it has apps and you can use it everywhere (on pc, android, iphone, by cellphone,

by landline): if you are travelling a lot... if you find the best offer (by further own research)

rates will be comparable to using 006 dialing code (but all this cheap offers try to cheat if basis in

western world)... reloading payment is flexible (30 services). you can even enter the 2 phone numbers at a website

and both phones will ring.

the young people dont pay at all and use skype or viber with their mobiles

for calls not invoking the traditional phone system...

regards,

erwin
