I'm not in the north east, but not to far away, our recent birth at Phitsanuvej hospital in Phitsanulok cost 18,000 baht for a natural birth with a 3 night stay in a private room with air con, TV and sofa bed for daddy and additional nursery care for the baby the first night.

Scans and monthly checks were costing anything between 500 baht minimum and 1800 baht maximum.

The price for a c section was nearly double at 30,000 baht.

Service was excellent throughout,my biggest disappointment was not being allowed to be present at the birth, something you may want to check on before you agree to use any hospital,I was told I would be allowed in briefly but hospital policy was not to allow me to be present throughout.

I was allowed in briefly after missing the birth and at the time rather angry, but this being Thailand I didn't cause a scene and just went along with it,I may well use another hospital next time for this reason only.

^^ Great post (sb) ...

My understanding from reading the stories are that the Father is not allowed in the delivery room of a Government Hospital.

Sometime there is more then one mother giving birth at the same time.

Some Private Hospitals can/do vary that though ...

thomas28 ... your best advice is right here on this Forum!

Have a read of the subject at the top of this Forum Page entitled having-a-baby-in-thai-hospital - clickable link.

If the baby is born in a Government Hospital in the area where the Mother is registered and it is a push birth and not an 'Expressway' (C-Section) birth and you don't opt for a private room ... it's virtually free.

But the Mother will want the trimmings so pump you for a private room and the doctors earn extra money for the hospital by recommending a C-Section.

If you go for a Private Hospital you (not saying the birthing mother) will get better treatment ... but the expenses mount quickly and if the bub needs a humidicrib ... skyrocket.

Just my opinion ... read everyone's experiences in the link provided.

It's free in the government hospital. Totally free, no charge of any kind for mother and baby.

Aftercare for baby, weekly, monthly checkups at hospital for two years, home visits, vaccinations, etc., totally free.

Nothing wrong with the government hospitals, they do a really good job in maternity.

Actually they seem to do a really good job with all the child stuff.

Bit of queuing but the mums love to sit and chat with each other, big social event.

As David said, government hospital, no men allowed in delivery ward/room.

Baby is usually delivered by a midwife, doctor oversees everyone.

1k a night for a private room after the birth if you really want it.

A few baht for vitamin supplements if she wants them.

My daughter was born in the government maternity hospital in Chiang Mai.

My wife rode on the back of a bike to the hospital. Her labor started while we were having breakfast at the hospital. Off to the delivery room, where the birth occurred in about 45 minutes. Went to the front desk to pay the delivery bill when we were ready to leave. It was a total of 3500 baht as I recall.....As that hospital did not have any private rooms, I elected to go to another hospital for three days just to keep an eye on things.

Bit of a shocker as government hospital is free (assuming your wife is Thai and not an illegal of some sort)).

They must have seen you coming a long way off.

Darn !!! Double priced again.... :-) As I recall a fair amount of the bill was supplies. It would have been hard to argue over the bill, as I thought having a baby born for slightly over 100 dollars seemed like a good deal to me.....lol

Yep, all supplies are free too.

(of course foreigners, illegals and people without a Thai ID card have to pay)

So if my wife had gone there for the birth by herself, it would have been free ? So if I show up, a bill is automatically generated?

That seems a bit unseemly at best. That is something a Thai street merchant does when a Thai girl buys something with her boyfriend reaching for his wallet.

I am wondering why myself?

Government hospital usually doesn't do that, in the past she would have needed to be registered in a local house book. But the rules on that changed a few years back, how long ago was it?

Hill-tribe and Burmese have to pay, your wife does have Thai ID?

Was three years ago, and yes my wife had Thai ID. Maybe I am using the wrong term here of government hospital. It was the government run hospital in Chiang Mai that was maternity only, I cannot recall the name. So maybe there was a modest fee structure. Either way, it seemed pretty cheap to me... :-)

My Lao wife had our baby, delivered by C-section in a government hospital. Total cost with 3 days in private room was just over 13,000 baht. I then claimed the 13,000 baht back from the department of work and pensions as I pay tax. My son is now 13 months old and all check ups and vaccinations have been free. All Thai nationals receive free health care, so if you don't mind being present for the birth, have the baby in a government hospital. I couldn't be present and at the time it was quite stressful. If I was in the financial situation to pay for private care I would of, but the money was more important for my son than for me to be present at the birth.
