Popular Post Phronesis
I was at a party in a bar in Chalong pier road the other night. There were several blokes there from Australia that had been to Thailand many times, but who still live back home. The conversation turned to the dangers of day to day life both here in Phuket and in other areas of Thailand. One bloke had just got back from a few weeks up in Bangkok and commented on the insanity of the traffic there and the growing presence of Nigerian thugs. The obvious dangers were quickly identified and agreed upon. Of course they included traffic accidents, the increasing use of guns and knifes on farangs, and the fact that most Thais (including police) will stand around and watch someone die rather than stepping in to render first aid. Knowing that I had now lived in Thailand full time for more than four years, one the guys in the group turned to me and said "[Phonesis] you are the only one that lives here full time. What frightens you most? I reflected for a moment and then offered my reply. "The carrots in my refrigerator". I grew up dirt poor as a lad and during the school holidays, to help mum out with some money, had to head off to rural Australia to pick vegetables. I worked for several years on a carrot and turnip farm north west of Newcastle. I spent hundreds of mind numbing hours standing next to a conveyer belt grading carrots that came out of the the giant tumbling washing machine that was used to clean the harvested vegetables prior to bagging them for market. "I am no stranger to carrots" I told the blokes huddled around me attempting to hear my opinion above the noise of the nearby karaoke. "But I have never in all my life seen carrots so very orange as the ones I buy here in Tesco. Apparently they are imported from China. And god knows what they are doing to them to maintain the day-glow colour". There was a rather awkward pause while the blokes in the group processed my reply. Someone then broke the silence by showing us a photo of the girl with huge breasts that he had recently met while in the Philippines. Popular Post Indrid Cold
Nice story and now that you say it they do look a little bit to colorfull the carrots here. What scares me the most here is that they will change the visa rules so i can not stay any longer.

Popular Post up-country_sinclair
What frightens you most here in Thailand Minivan drivers and bus drivers. And I'm not joking. I was driving home today, and witnessed once again the reckless manner in which these knuckleheads put everyone's lives in danger-their passengers, other people on the road and themselves.

You need to develop your peripheral vision. Yes, you need not move your head to enjoy those passing tits. Also, convince your other half you have decided to wear strong sunglasses at the recommendation of your doc. Problem solved.

Popular Post PaullyW
^^ I could leave as well, but I can't say it would be pleasant to move with career and life/friends etc. Also, as much as I dislike about Thailand, in my old age, I'm not sure I could find a place I dislike less! So, I would probably just hunker down and pray for the best.

Popular Post Stradavarius37
Not scared of anything, because 1) i'm not a pu$$y, and 2) I keep my head down, keep my voice soft, and keep my nose out of other people's business. Did you expect me to ask for a photo of the carrots? This thread is useless without pictures. We should compare the carrots to the melons.

Popular Post wellred
Would be the drivers for me too. I just can't see how an entire nation cannot properly know how to drive. Why is there no health and safety laws? On a light note another thing which scares is me is the fact that non Asian women no longer turn me on.

Ringmybells
Yesssss I am most of the time scared of what I eat. Sauces and food here in Thailand are full of MSG. I have no idea how much fertilizer they put in veggies. Not many organic veggietables are available here in Thailand.
