Chonburi: Motorcycle crash costs foreign man his leg

The lad was practicing his off-road sand riding skills - you know, for riding the deserts of North Africa when he gets home. Probably one of them 250cc Kawi's or Hondas. Gets into a tank slapper, loses control and whammo, nails a boat.

Not hard to reach a rational conclusion.

Regardless of who was to blame the guy will probably have to live without a foot. A lower limb amputation is easier to adapt to than an above knee one but none are easy. Just hope it does not happen to you and try to protect yourself with a helmet and not getting on a bike drunk. It is too late to lecture him.

Before commenting further be a good idea to read the news story at the URL below that appears to be more accurate reporting.

Pattaya Police were informed that a motorbike had crashed into a boat trailer at Thepprasit Rd. Police are now in the process of contacting the owner of the boat trailer as it is illegal to park boat trailers on the roadside.

From The Op

The witness said that the body of the foreign man had been thrown 50 metres away from the crash. The accident also caused the man to lose a part of his left leg.

Police said they would contact the owner of the speedboat and proceed with the legal investigation.

Well if this is the standard Thai measurement for a meter and anything like my wife's, then 50m will in fact be 10m. You have to laugh at the police. A young foreign guy has been seriously injured and they say "we will contact the owners of the speedboat", nothing about contacting the family of the injured. Then again I guess people with speedboats will have money according to the thinking of the BiB.

From the link posted above concerning the reporting of the news item elsewhere it says

It was reported that his foot was entirely ripped off from his leg. Doctors at Banglamung Hospital are trying to somehow connect his foot with leg again.

Sounds like the doctors were looking on Google for some ideas as to what to do rolleyes.gif

according to the heading-the accident cost him his leg,!!!! did he sell it to pay for the damage ????

Also they said they are trying to reconnect his foot to his leg ??? he lost the leg.

What kind of motorbike was he driving since he could be thrown 50 meters from impact..

Any kind of bike. It's a complex calculation with lots of variables, but a throw of 50m after colliding with a stationary object implies a speed in the region of 65 klm/h at impact. Not really that fast.

I was just wondering about the mention of the boat being on the beach. Is that just a translation problem as I can't imagine being able to go that fast on a beach. If it was on the road next to the beach then yes you're right of course it's a question of speed rather than the type of bike. Does seem a long way though but then maybe the 50 metres is a guess.

Sad for the guy at that age to lose a leg but it seems he may only have himself to blame.

Edit: If this is the same story then it seems this happened on the road which does make more sense.

Foreigner suffers traumatic amputation after Jomtien road accident

road-2.jpg

PATTAYA: -- A Foreigner in his twenties suffered a traumatic amputation of his left foot, below the knee, in the early hours of Wednesday after a road accident involving a trailer carrying a speedboat which was parked on the side of the road in Jomtien.

Police and rescue services rushed to the scene of the accident on the Tepprasit Road in front of the Weekend Market site.

Lying on the road and screaming in agony was the foreign man who was too distressed to reveal his name, age or nationality.

His left foot had been completely detached from his body just below the knee. Witnesses saw the man driving at high speed and erratically along the Tepprasit Road moments before the accident which occurred during a period of heavy rain making road conditions extremely hazardous.

How long before one of our fruitloop TV naysayers manages to pin this on the Thai bloke for parking his boat on the beach? blink.png

I am still trying to figure out if the guy was riding his motorcycle on the beach, or if in reality the boat was parked on the road by the beach.

Hmm, not sure. How long does it usually take you to say that foreigners who are robbed, shot or murdered deserved to be robbed, shot or murdered?

What the hell was he doing on a motorbike on a beach?

S..t happens.

Are you serious? Have you had a L I F E!

Have you ever done anything slightly unusual? Indeed oddly pleasurable? Daring and different?

A motorbike on a beach is one of life's experiences. Especially at night. Especially during full moon, which it wasn't.

Especially when you are a bit drunk. Not too drunk.

Especially with a gorgeous naked partner on pillion.

We are just lucky he had no one else on the bike with him.

No matter where something is parked, it is, by being parked, inanimate. Even though, unexpected.

Where is Forrest Gump when we need him?

How do we know he was drunk? One witness says he swerved the bike. However if a farang does something stupid in my experience the Thais will always assume the farang to be drunk; 'farang mao'. Hardly evidence and not admissible in any credible court of law.

I will wait for blood alcohol analysis report before jumping to conclusions. They did take one I presume or was it the usual keystone cops routine?

Tepprasip Road, is the road that runs between Jomptien and Sukomvit highway. nowhere near the beach. This accident was opposite the night market near to the main highway. So the Boat must have been parked on the road there. WHY ??? if it was night time usually all boats are towed to yards away from the beach and driven back for start of day.

This has blown the whole story apart. WHY wasn't it given initially ??? and why speculate with an inaccurate report. Now posters have a good idea on what to post. Amazing

your kidding right, 65k crash equals 50mt throw as you Put it, Perhaps you could outline your calculations, this idiot was cruising to say the least to be thrown 50m

The idiot is the one who wasn't there that calls others names, and doesn't know all the details.

For all we know, the boat was illegally parked with no lights, reflectors, or anything, and dimly lit streets; a hundred different scenarios & details.

If misfortune strikes home to you, can we call you names too?

As one of the original members of Thai Visa I am disgusted to how the site has deteriorated into uncaring sarcastic trash comments….this is a HUMAN with family and they are going to have a nightmare repatriating this guy

Sadbah.gif

If it is a below the knee operation he can probably get a prosthesis and learn to use it reasonably in about 3 months. If it is above the knee it is 50.50 whether he will be able to use a prosthetic to walk more than very short distances, He has a lifetime of paying up to $30000 every three years for a protheis.

Not really something to laugh about. And I can assure you that lying on the road waiting for an ambulance is agony. I have...and lost a whole leg.

Before all you bush lawyers and comedian's make a comment/speculate, why not read the story correctly.? coffee1.gif I f you look at the photo published on the link site, he is clearly lying on a bitumen surface and not a beach. That suggest,s he crashed into a boat trailer parked on the road which is illegal. That is why the police want to question the boat trailers owner.
