I wish to apply for a work permit.

The job I need the work permit for does not require a degree but does require certain qualifications that I have.

In order for me to obtain a work permit do I have to have a university degree even though my job does not require one?

I have searched on google but the only information that comes back is relative to teaching English which isn't the job I want

You need the job (or a specific job offer) before you can apply for the necessary visa/work permit !

Perhaps if you were to tell what job you have in mind the TV experts could advise appropriately

Ok.

You will need to wait until one of the experts turns up.

There are requirements associated with the company offering the work and with the number of Thai people the company employs.

Someone will give you appropriate advise soon

You can not apply for work permit.

Only the company that will employ you can do that.

For a western alien the company must:

1. Have 2 million in capital per foreign employee. ( can be 1 MBaht if alien married to Thai national )

2. Have 4 Thai working in the company per foreign employee. ( can be 2 Thai t if alien married to Thai national )

3. The alien must be paid a minimum salary. ( for a western employee, 50.000 baht/month)

Good news is is that there are not any regulations about a degree expect if you want to get a teachers licence.

There is no minimum salary for a work permit.

The 50k number is only for extensions of stay at immigraton.

is there actually an age limit in TH when it comes to applying for a work-permit as an alien ?

No, there is no age limit.

Normal retirement age is 60 years, but many people work well beyond that age and getting a work permit is no problem.

away from a teachers license, its typically the employers job description submitted to the DOL that determines whether a degree is required

You have to submit copies of educational, professional credentials and/or a reference from a former employer as evidence that you are properly qualified to do the job. A university degree is not mandatory, except for teachers. The employer needs to submit a written explanation with documentary evidence as to why a Thai cannot be employed for the job - new requirement since the 2008 Working of Aliens Act. That sounds scary but they don't seem very tough on the the explanation and documentary evidence so far.

I understand the above stated rules are the rules.

But other than the fact that This Is Thailand (TIT), it baffles me a bit when I regularly read and see things that show non-Thais to have work permits here in situations where clearly the employer is not complying with the 4 (or 2) Thais per foreigner work permit.

I guess I'm thinking in the main about what seems to be a lot of small foreigner run companies consisting of a husband, a wife, and not much else. Though I'm sure there are other examples and situations.

One gets the impressions there's a lot of Thai nominees activity going on in this area, just like there is for company ownership and such.

Thailand has tons of rules, many of them seemingly ignored more than they're followed in reality. I'm just wondering how diligently the foreign employees rule is really followed in the real (Thai) world.

If the spouse has a visa based on marriage, I just assumed he is entitled to a work permit without the restrictions that others must follow.

Is a company still required to have x thai employees per foreigner and pay a minimum 40,000 baht a month?

no the restrictions are exactly the same as if unmarried, except in the circumstance where the married foreigner is setting up a a limited company and the requirements are halved, ie the Captialisation for the company is THB 1 .0 million and the number of employees is 2.

for a WP issue this is no minimum salary to be paid, your confused..the minimum salary stated is for extension of stay based on employment, if the "he" already had a marriage visa on extension of stay "he" could get a WP with no salary minimum

Being married does little as regards a WP application, the criteriae are the same other than some labour offices still accept that if the applicant is married to a Thai then only 2 Thai workers are required per WP along with just one million of captalisation, not two.

40,000 is the required pcm income option for a 777/2551 Case 2.18 One year Extension of Permission to Stay based on having a Thai Spouse, there is no mimimum income for a WP per se.
