Photos Gerd Seidel, Chaiwat Sardyaem BANGKOK: Prime Minister and Defence Minister Yingluck Shinawatra owns B45.69 million worth of jewellery and accessories, according to information on the asset list provided by the National Anti-Corruption Commission this week. The figure was made public when the NACC published the assets and liabilities of members of the Yingluck Shinawatra cabinet, following the swearing in of new members on June 30.Ms Yingluck recorded B628.6 million in assets and B27 million in liabilities putting her B601 million into the black.Apart from cash, land, buildings and vehicles, Ms Yingluck owns 73 items of “personal accessories”, 57 of which are assorted pieces of jewellery totaling B41.78 million baht, with a four-karat diamond ring worth B2.3 million being the most valuable. She also has nine wristwatches of different brands including Rolex, Cartier and Patek Philippe, worth a combined B1.81 million, while her seven most expensive handbags all are made by Hermes, and together worth B2.1 million. The NACC report also showed Ms Yingluck possesses 12 items of jewelled ornaments, each of them worth more than one million baht. The most expensive item is a 13.5-karat diamond pendant worth 7.7 million baht. The PM is, however, a long way behind Deputy Prime Minister Pongthep Thepkanchana in the overall wealth stakes. His listed assets total B3.09 billion more than his liabilities - making him roughly five times richer than the PM in terms of declared assets.Source: http://www.thephuketnews.com/pm-yingluck%E0%B9%82%E2%82%AC%C2%99s-jewellery-worth-b45m-41677.php -- Phuket News 2013-09-

scorecard
I am a supporter of the notion of a progressive tax system. Agree, pure capitalism tends to make the rich richer and the poor poorer. There needs to me mechanisms which aim to share the wealth, to some extent.

The thing that occured to me was this info published in the Thai media as is..just imagine the "poor people" reading that list...THB 2.1 million for 7 handbags..!!!!!...I am all for politican's reavealing their assets, but surely publishing a list like this is in "bad taste" surely enough to say personal effects = THB XXXX millions etc, but to publish the brandnames and what the personal assets are This message is brought to you by Rolex...

Yes a popular concept.......increase taxes for all and Thailand will end up as crippled as the West. Surely we are not here to infect them with our financial diseases?
hellodolly
I am a supporter of the notion of a progressive tax system. Make it an extra 30% higher for politicians. They will graft the money some where. It will not be money the NACC will know about.

Popular Post ratcatcher
In all honesty does it really matter what is the value of the Ms Yingluck's accessories? She's a very rich woman and I'm sure there are thousands of rich women in this country with handbags, watches, jewellery, cars etc worth as much or more. She seems to have good taste in some things, just like Marie Antoinette. It's only money. I wish I had a fraction, but that's not the point. I don't care how many watches she has or indeed the numbers of silk underwear she possesses. What I think is worth caring about is the number of times she shows up at parliament to do her job on behalf of all the Thai people, rich and poor alike and the number of times she tells the truth when asked a straightforward question.
PhootThaiMaiDai
Hmmm... Anybody else wondering how much more she's actually worth? Where the assets are hidden, how much just this term she's diverted from the Thai people? It's not like the other politicians aren't doing it, but the "Shinawatra" name is so synonymous with graft and corruption...

Yes it does matter while people are debating the value of the puppet PM's acessories, the real rape and pillage of the country can go on without people noticing, a smoke screen if you wish... as to your question as to the number of times she has turned up at parliment to do her job...We pretty much know the answer to that one, therefore not much to report on that front so the media reports the number of expensive handbags she has got, cos they cant report her politican opinions or plans..cos she dont have any...

Maybe..maybe not...value is not just based on the number of carets Well I would presume she isn't buying a bad quality one. As I said, I would exclude expect someone of get family wealth to have a lot more in jewellery and effects than this.

Popular Post LuukKoeyKorat
I tend to agree with ratcatcher - whats the point in getting worked up about her declared wealth? She was rich before, is rich now and will continue to be extremely rich when she leaves the job. Graft and corruption would still go on even if she was a dirt poor PM. How many pennies she has doesn't make a difference - how many good political decisions she comes up with does.

You think she drives a jazz?Dropping 50mn baht on diamonds is really quite easy, she has more than enough available funds. slapout
This report shows just how shallow some peoples mindset can be. To impress the young, they could have listed her mobil phone devices and various color options etc. What charities are supported? What educational, health research, etc are supported. What has the incivicual done to improve other peoples plight and will they leave the world a better place due to their having held a position which provided them the avenue to do so? This report is not surprising as it seems to validate part of the reputation the PM has aquired while in a position to lead the country.
