bradenroger
I'm not a hundred percent sure but I thought I saw par-boiled rice at Best Supermarket near the Dolphin Round-about North Pattaya. Good luck,
moonseeker
Thank you. Parboiled "Uncle Ben's" is a different consistency. We call it "dry rice". Goes well with Goulash etc. Thanks. Will check in supermarket tomorrow. MS>
hanno
Sorry, but I don't understand: if there is one thing they do well in this part of the world, it is rice. Why would you want to buy Uncle Ben's?

Why would you want to buy Uncle Ben's? I want to find "parboiled rice", which I understand is also produced in Thailand. I am actually not much fan of the average quality rice out of the steamers (oftenhours....) often very tasteless and deprived of many nutrients. Actually there is some very good info on Rice, Uncle Ben's, Parboiled on the www. and I will update if I find what I am looking for. THX. Michaelaway
Eat Thai Jasmine rice... it's delicious & nutritious, too!
chickenslegs
I'm pretty sure I've seen "Uncle Ben's" rice in Friendship or Foodland - Ready in 5 minutes? I would check the sell-by date as I don't expect the stuff is flying off the shelves - may have been resting there since 'Nam. "Uncle Ben's" is (AFAIK) American long grain rice. Big C on Pattaya Klang has a selection of different rices - not just Thai, so you may find American rice there (rear of the store, past the bread, or on the 'foreign food' shelves, to the right of the fruit and veg.). bangkokstick
You really want this ugly rice that we eat in western countries ?!?
RabC
I fully agree with the OP, American Long Grain rice has a totally different texture to Thai Jasmine rice and therefore goes better with some dishes. Also I wouldn't use Thai rice with Indian food, I would buy basmati . Friendship does have quite a selection of rices but haven't looked for Uncle Bens. Just testing the Carrefour Brand Long Grain "Casino" (BIG C/Klang) in the foreign section. 4 x 2 portions, cooking for 10 minutes, 75 Baht only. Delicious with a nice Hungarian goulash or meatballs on an Italian tomato sauce. THX. again. MS>
Barefoot
I agree with the OP that Uncle Ben's parboiled rice is awesome. I know the idea of bringing rice to Thailand sounds like bringing sand to the beach, but I grew up with Uncle Ben's and indeed my German mother made it with Goulash, and that sauce just doesn't go well with the consistency of most types of rice. I have looked for the original style Uncle Ben's (not the lousy 5-min variety) for 7 years in Pattaya and, alas, I haven't found it. I have friends bring me a 5-pound sack or two when they visit.

It is just a source of carbs with almost no other nutritional benefits.

rak sa_ngop
Apparently there are lots of packets of Uncle Ben's rice left on the shelves in British supermarkets. I saw one photo of a completely cleaned out supermarket aisle except for one small section containing packets of UB rice. That says something.
