balo Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 Ok I washed my new car for the first time today and paid 120 baht , they did a good job and I think the price was low. But is it normal to tip , I don't think so ? I gave them a 20 baht tip..... Sent from my GT-I9300 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app
richard_smith237 Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 Got any other nail biting comments ? Got any other totally useless and unhelpful replies itchybum? On Topic: I don't tip at car-washes... But I have a membership at one nearby so there are no cash transactions when I visit. But: one time some bird-muck left some stubborn paint defects, one of the guys spent 15mins polishing that out with some 'special' compound (no idea what it was) I tipped him 100b. In short tip what you feel happy tipping.
macanello Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 It is normal here in Bangkok anyway. I always leave 20 baht
Hedghog Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 Give a useful tip. As in,Don't eat yellow snow, don't pee on an electric fence, don't bite the hand that feeds you.etc. Sent from my GT-P7500 using Thaivisa Connect Thailand mobile app
khunjerrybkk Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 Perhaps you should consider that the average Thai car-wash worker does much for the 20-50 baht they get paid per hour. We as foreigners' can surely find the compassion to give a more rewarding tip. My suggestion is to tip equal what the price for the car-wash would be in YOUR COUNTRY.... A good car-wash in CM cost 250 baht....plus I add a tip of 120 baht. They ALWAYS appreciate the consideration for their work/efforts.
VocalNeal Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 If one was going to tip 20b then it would need to be 20 each for everyone that worked on the car. Otherwise it gets shared. Give it to them personally.

Do not compare things, it doesn't work.

If you tip 120 baht for a 250 baht carwash you must be an American to do that... I think most Thais never tip at the carwash but I might be wrong. Briggsy Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 I don't trust them. I wash my own vehicle. Sometimes I watch these "car valetters" and check out what they are up to. They appear a motley crew to me.

BSJ Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 Here we go "Back in my country we........" News flash, your here.....not there. I don't see the Thai's tipping so I stopped doing it. 1

Yes that reminds me I must give the landlady an extra 10,000 baht this month to bring my rent in line with what I paid in the UK. Don't many people come here to actually live cheaper,is that not much of the appeal for most ?
aussiebebe Posted September 6, 2013 Posted September 6, 2013 If you're interested in Thai customs, Thais don't directly hand the tip to each employee, they just add the tip to the bill or put the tip in a tip box where it's shared. I enjoy waxing my car myself but am happy to pay for the grunt work of washing; I used to get an exterior-only wash at Shell for an outrageously low 60 baht, so I always paid 100, then the minimum wage came into force and they started charging 90b so now I just pay that.
