Tak: Two forest rangers killed in gun battle with tiger hunters

Why do they not put a small Army Base in these Parks, Same as some African States are doing, Nairobi, Kenya etc the have cut poaching down by 2 thirds, way to go!

I don't know if that's such a good idea. All you'd need is 1, 2 or 3 bad boys who are offered big money for dead cats, and - they might sneak off base with their weapons. If top brass are decrepit and easy to coerce with bribes (like the police chief who went to HK to lick T's shoes), those at the lower rungs should be a cake-walk.

Also: look at the market for tiger parts: Mainly China, but Vietnam, HK, Taiwan are players. Maybe Korea also?

I have zero sympathy for poachers, and this talk of 'awwww, they need more job opportunities, etc.' Let the poacher contemplate that with a bullet through his heart, or better than that, he'll get smart before he's shot in the woods.

The officials/protectors have given their precious lives for the noblest cause: Protecting nature. Their families should be amply compensated.

Just down the road in Tak, different amphur. My family have spotted 8 tigers knocking about in the hills and in the fields near the houses. According to my wife's uncle he had seen one behind my grandmother's house. They threw fishing nets at them to spook them. They called poo yai ban and he called they police. They sent a commando unit according to the wife. No luck in finding them though.

Scary to think I like to have a sleep in a hammock under the trees when I go. No more sleeping though for me biggrin.png

And why are they in the vicinity ...?? Any wonder ??? Their natural habitats have been destroyed and they are being hunted and poached,,,, actually BOTH!! So stay in your bed in safety until they are all extinct and then you can resume your comfort hours in your hammock!

The tiger hunters haven't killed all the wild tigers already? I thought Thailand was pretty much devoid of wildlife. Think about it: when was the last time you saw road kill that wasn't a dog or a cat...maybe an occasional snake.

You are quite wrong, there is actually plenty of wildlife in some of the National Parks; National Parks that are way better protected than in Laos, Vietnam, or here in Cambodia.

And even in India as that maybe hard to believe !!!

Not my department, but if you boyz and girlz are going to go after killers and murderers, you'd better pack your lunch.

What good is telling us of your woes and attempting to generate public support when it doesn't really matter what we think anyways?

Poachers have got their reasons, and I am sure you do as well, but maybe if poachers have a better way of life and a bit more hope instilled in their hearts when they woke up in the morning, they'd be more likely to hang up their guns and focus on more edifying livelihoods.

People do not naturally decide to become poachers. I am sure they don't love their job. I am even more sure that they would rather instead like to do something less exhaustive, and to be closer to their family and friends than to walk all over the countryside looking for a rare beast to shoot, and try to avoid getting eaten or shot by rangers into the bargain.

It is the economy that usually drive crime in an inverse proportion.

And in the event anyone wants to claim that poachers are bad people, and they have no respect for life, I would say that there are probably more rangers, police, judges, murderers, politicians, minivan and bus drivers, and the like who are more guilty of that sentiment than a rag tag bunch of tiger and elephant killers.

...'sImply a few thoughts to consider regarding this subject.

Aw, the poor babies. They're just packing AK 47's and killing forest rangers because they are underprivileged. Someone should feed them from a baby bottle.

Another bleeding heart saying that people turn to poaching because they need a better life. People do it because they are like drug dealers and pimps the money is good. There is no punishment for what they do they are usually let go. Make an example give them a harsh sentence and make they serve it instead of cutting it down. I have no sympathy for these people and I would cut off their hand so they couldn't do it again. Follow the money and it will lead to some high profile high ranking officials.

One of three suspects behind killing of rangers arrested
The Sunday Nation

TAK: -- One of the three tiger hunters allegedly involved in Thursday's night's gun battle in the eastern section of Thungyai Naresuan in Tak's Umphang district, which resulted in the deaths of two forest rangers, surrendered to the authority yesterday. Officials are now on the lookout for the other two hunters.

A source reported yesterday that following the deadly gunfight that also resulted to one hunter's death, the authorities managed to arrest Hmong hunter Khaneung Saema, who denied he had fired at any official. Another suspect Jeu Saema surrendered to officials later yesterday.

Meanwhile, the funerals for slain rangers Boonsri Inthapanya, 51, and Anthong Ngamying, 22 were held at Wat Panitniramon in Umphang district. National Park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department deputy chief Sermyos Somman visited the slain officials' families and planned to inspect the clash scene and follow through on the search for the hunters.

Aww you sound like the perfect human being.... give me a break.

Your pathetic attempt at empathy has left me sick.

My wife's grandmother has been on this planet 80ish years and never have there been tigers until now. Yes because of what you say poachers and being run around but what do you want my family to do?

Muppet biggrin.png

Care a little perhaps....but they are Thai, so no chance.

Wonder if they are responsible perhaps for some of the habitat loss ??

Ok so they up weapons and stop the poachers, not going to happen is it.

As I previously said they informed the area boys and in turn he informed the police and relevant authorities. But you're right they don't care :D

I met a ranger coming out of the jungle after he had spent a three day recy stint looking for poachers. He was fully kitted out - camo, radio and had an SLR. He was ex special forces trained and seemed very competent. However, these guys might do better with an AK47. The old SLR was OK in its time, in my opinion, but the AK is a great weapon for that kind of work and has some fire power.

I must say I had no idea that so many rangers had been killed. Not good.

The rangers may be better off armed with either pump action or automatic shotguns in that environment using man guage shot.

The spread is better than any automatic rifle within the range of perhaps 25 metres and if you are feeling particulary nasty you can use solid shot.

The forest rangers are poorly paid and as a fighting force they are not that great but that isn't their job anyway.

I have several friends who are forest rangers in the Mae Won national park.

Edited for bad spelling.

42 have been killed since 2009? I didn't know forest rangers faced such perils. And if the government is serious about this, why does it not employ trained units t deal with poachers...take the lot of these scumbags out. I hope the government is paying out large compensation to the families of the deceased. I doubt their salaries are very high and go to work each day not knowing if they will return or not.

The Chinese purveyors of "traditional" medicine will always pay a better salary per endangered animal.. There is an almost unlimited market and the Chinese aspirational middle class is growing quickly.

It does surprise me that in asia everything can be faked, from Viagra to baby formula to Luis Vittles, but for some reason there is no Chinese company making millions of profit from faking the tasteless sludge which passes for rhino horn and ground up tiger penis....

It won't be easy - to effect a positive change in the Chinese demand for endangered animal parts. It's tough to try and change deep set ignorant habits which have existed for generations. If the Chinese were 1/10th as interested in stemming the trade in endangered species/body parts as they were in coveting islands belonging to other countries, ....we might see some glimmer of hope for tigers, rhinos, snow leopards, and others.

The tiger petting zoos, in Thailand, are quite likely feeding in to those same Chinese proclivities, but neither entity would admit it, if asked. Honesty is considered silly or stupid, by such people.
