I downloaded some files of the above nature, and have been struggling to play them, I have used the DVIX player and the VLC player, no joy. Did a couple of seaches on the net, and have yet to find a link to a free player, that will allow me to play these files! I would be be grateful for any help! Thanks!

You can't play them because rar (and the sfv integrity check) are simply compressed versions of the movie or music file you want to play

you will need winrar to extract these files into a format your media player will recognise

.rar files are just compressed files, just like zip files. Can be anything, e.g. several pictures compressed into 1 rar file, a complete music album compressed into 1 rar file etc...

Both mp3's and divx, or any other compressed media for that matter will not reduce much in size when compressing with either zip or rar, it's mostly done for the convenience of putting several files into one big file...

Winzip will take care of zip files, winrar of the rar files.

Several freeware solutions are available as well...

Just download 7zip and you'll be able to extract nearly any kind of compression or archivage.

" 7-Zip is free software distributed under the GNU LGPL"

Supported formats:

* Packing / unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR

* Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM and DEB

Download here in english: http://www.7-zip.org/

As for sfv:

SFV stands for Simple File Verification.

Some of the downloaded files in the Net come bundled with a file that has an extension of .sfv -- this file is simply a verification file for the downloaded file itself.

SFV is basically a mathematical short checksum number based on the original file. When user downloads the original file and the .sfv file, user can use dedicated SFV check programs that use the SFV data to check the status of the downloaded file. If the SFV's checsum data doesn't match to the data that the validation program gets from the downloaded file, it typically means that the downloaded file is not complete or that the downloaded file has been corrupted during the transfer and needs to be downloaded again.
