STOPPAGE TIME
When Thaksin should say nothing at all

Tulsathit Taptim

BANGKOK: -- Thaksin Shinawatra is an emotional man, and emotional men will usually regret what they say, sooner or later. It's unfair, therefore, if we conclude that his latest exclusive interview with Thai Rath is that of a frustrated "champion of democracy" sending his own peace initiative down the drain. His political reform overtures didn't stand much chance to begin with, so a man whose mouth often gets the better of him deserves all the benefit of the doubt he can get.

New Chinese ambassador to Thailand eyes greater Chinese investment in Thailand

BANGKOK, 25th September 2013 (NNT) – The new Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, Mr. Ning Fukai, has assumed his post in Bangkok this month as China's 11th Ambassador to Thailand.

Mr.Ning, 58, a former ambassador to South Korea and Cambodia, said that China and Thailand have shared close ties for a long time despite different political regimes. China is the second largest importer of Thai products and is the top tourist destination for Thailand. According to him, every year, as many as 13 million people travel between China and Asean.

Thailand is China's second largest trading partner in ASEAN, with a bilateral trade value of over 700million US dollars or 21.7 billion baht during January-August 2013. The new Chinese Ambassador indicated that China intends to work in partnership with Thailand to develop the latter’s railways, water management, clean energy and education. He said China sees extremely close ties with Thailand on 3 points, one of which is on their strategic partnership, as both countries are bound together in many agreements and signed treaties with constant exchange of visits between leaders.

Secondly, on economic relations, the two countries have set bilateral trade target to reach 100 billion US dollars, or about 3 trillion baht by 2015. Besides, the two countries have engaged in many collaborative projects such as those on the high speed rail, water management, clean energy, education and science and technology.

Mr.Ning expects that more Chinese investors will be pouring into Thailand in the next few years, and the Chinese embassy will happily support that trend. Thirdly, on cultural relations, China will support cultural exchanges and give out 15,000 scholarships to Thai and ASEAN students within the next 3-5 years.
