Pattaya booms

PATTAYA: -- Pattaya's tourist trade is booming with improved services and infrastructure, including hotels, the Fairtex sport complex, cinemas, shopping malls and the upcoming opening of Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Last year 5,338,009 tourists arrived in Pattaya, up 6.5 per cent from 2004, according to the Tourism Authority. Of these, 66 per cent were foreign. With an average length of stay of 3.4 days and average daily expenditures of Bt2,819 per person, tourists spent about Bt48 billion in the resort.

Last year there were 293 hotels and guesthouses with a combined 34,007 rooms in Pattaya. They had an average occupancy rate of 58 per cent.

"In 2005, the hotel occupancy rate grew by 28 per cent. Pattaya has a strong prospect of attracting more tourists in this year," said TAT governor Juthamas Siriwan. Pattaya was benefiting from its proximity to Bangkok, she said, and could be reached in about 90 minutes via two motorways.

In recent years, Pattaya has seen a wide range of tourism-related developments. The Pattaya Beach Bus has recently opened its Red Line service, which runs a lengthy, circular route around the city. Healthland Spa has just opened one of its popular resorts. Meanwhile, Fairtex is Pattaya's newest entertainment complex, combining a Thai boxing school for foreigners, a traditional Thai massage service and fitness centre.

I hope all the Pattaya detractors have a good read of this article.

5,338,009 tourists in 2005 can't be wrong and can't all be sex tourists and drop kicks as some (you know who you are) would incorrectly have us believe.

Mighty Mouse, I think it must be the uncrowded roads , the Immaculate Beaches, Low crime rates, great infrastructure, cleanliness, Great Transportation, fair prices for all, and the lack of Thousands of Hookers everywhere one looks.

Sounds nice. :o

And what's more, some 1.8 million of them were Thais. Now if Pattaya is such a cess pit, surely the Thais could find a better place to take a holiday? And I doubt whether many of them came for the women - they may be cheap for farangs, but a bit pricey for most Thais, and probably not to their taste either.

I don't reckon the detractors have much of a leg to stand on - probably paralytic from the outrage they've been causing with their troll posts, while all the time sneaking down here for dirty weekends and then cleansing their souls by shouting what a disgusting place it is. :o

I didn't think it would be long before you chimed in with your usual Pattaya bashing sarcasm. :D

Let's have a closer look at your latest whinge.

Uncrowded roads: Pattaya's roads become busy, mainly on the weekends when the Bangkokians come to town to soak up the excitement that Pattaya has to offer.

Pattaya is central to various attractions so there is no need to drive. You can walk to most places.

The immaculate beaches: Have you bothered to take a walk around the coast line between Pattaya and Jomptien? There are some glorious spots with clean water for swimming. How many great swimming beaches do you have in Britain or Bangkok?

Low crime rate: Do you have the official figures to compare Pattaya's crime rate with Bangkok's crime rate? If so, let's hear 'em and identify your source of information and I hope you can do better than the Pattaya Mail.

Great infrastructure: It will continue to improve as funds permit. It takes money, and lot's of it, before giant steps can be taken in this regard. If you are comparing a developing country to one from the West, you need to study how Governments obtain their funds from their respective taxation systems.

Great transportation: Nothing wrong with baht buses or motor bike taxis. Plenty on offer.

What more do you want?

Fair prices for all: The scrooges of the world are well known for their boring and predictable diabribe on double pricing. Is Pattaya any different to other parts of Thailand? Does the "scrooge" hat fit you?

Lack of thousands of hookers: Do you brand every Thai girl and boy you see walking around Pattaya, a hooker? What a sad excuse for a human being you must be. :D

Maigo6, I suggest you pack your bags, leave behind the misery that you find in Thailand and head back to Britain, or maybe you hate it there too.

Get your nose out of your ass and start smelling the roses. :o

Maigo6, parts of my last post were a little strongly worded with regard to my criticism of you.

I was attacking your views only and it was not my intention to flame you personally.

Feel free to reciprocate if you wish. I have thick skin and I can take it. :o
