Ah, that "bigotry" word again. Nice.

To put you straight, I don't give a cr@p whether anyone else is religious or not, and as long as it doesn't affect me, they can do whatever the hell they want. I personally am not religious (as you might have guessed) but I am not "intolerant" of others views, I just happen to hold different ones.

Perhaps it was an exaggeration to say religion is the number one cause of deaths worldwide, but if it's not #1, it's right on up there if you look back over world history and tot up all the deaths caused directly or indirectly by religion.

The number one cause of INTENTIONAL deaths in the last century was government. Stalin, Mao Hitler.....

and if one looks a little deeper into the regimes/philosophies under Stalin, Mao and most certainly Hitler....these people created "religions" around themselves, whose belief systems involved killing people who disagreed with their "religion"

In fact they "religions" these dictators created are no different from orgainsed religions in many respects...the bottom line one group of people controling another group of people

Dont get me wrong I have no problem with people who have religion/faith what ever you want to call it, but what I do have a problem with is when one group tries to push their version of "reality" down someone elses throats and saying someone elses version of reality is wrong to the point were they would kill someone because of those beliefs

Murders In the name of atheism? blink.png

Please point me to a single reported murder "in the name of atheism".

As far as proving whether gods exist, I believe in the Flying Spaghetti Monster. No one has proven to me that he doesn't exist, therefore he must exist.

Yes, sure! for example, in the communist Russia there was a war against religion (slogan: "Religion is the opium of the people" by K. Marx), priests was send to concentration camps and many was executed without a trail, there were a fa few cases of crucifiction (!!!) of priests. Same happened in China, North Korea, Cambodia and many other countries.

in a lot of respects communism in their war against organised religion created a "religion" based on communism, to me it is not a coincidence that Stalin at point in his life trained as a priest..

...and I thought it was the poor education system the caused our hosts to fall behind the rest of the world in use of grey matter. Now I realize that there isn't much grey matter there to begin with.

Actually as I mentioned in an earlier post, I remember reading about something similar happening in some loonie Chirstian sect in the US and if memory serves 2 or 3 people in the same family died drinking vast volumes of "holy water"...so it seems Thailand is not alone in the lack of gray matter stakes

Sounds like the poor kid was an undiagnosed epileptic,

and the seizures he occasionally had were labeled evil spirits,

and he had stress induced seizures during the water torture part of the exorcism.

The second caused him to drown. Very sad and ignorant.

As another poster here suggested swelling of the brain was likely the cause of the seizures.

The old adage: "the dose is the poison" is appropriate here. Even water in high dosages is a poison.

Let's assume he weighed 40 kilograms. The LDL50 (The median dosage of a rat forced to drink water such that 50% die is equal to or greater than 90 grams/k), therefore if the boy weighed 40k 3.6 Liters can be a lethal dose. (There is no known LDL50 for water for human's) Thus he likely died of water intoxication.

"Overhydration can cause acidosis (a condition in which blood and body tissues have an abnormally high acid content), anemia, cyanosis (a condition that occurs when oxygen levels in the blood drop sharply), hemorrhage, and shock. The brain is the organ most vulnerable to the effects of overhydration. If excess fluid levels accumulate gradually, the brain may be able to adapt to them, and the person will have only a few symptoms. If the condition develops rapidly, confusion, seizures, and coma are likely to occur."

The ultimate cause of death, most likely, would be arrhythmia (a cardiac anomaly).

A little known odd tidbit: The famous artist Andy Warhol likely died (though he was ill to start with) of water intoxication caused by intravenous solutions. (The hospital where he died never admitted this, but settled and paid Warhol's estate an unknown sum of money).

Also quite plausible medically.

Of course that leaves the question of what made them think this

highly invasive level or exorcism was needed in this household.

My thoughts also address that question down one possible path.

I don't believe the story as written, it would be impossible for him to drink much more than 4 litres of water without falling into a coma, let alone 18 litres. However the story goes on to mention that the 18 litres was to be drunk by "The Pilgrims", meaning there were several people drinking water from the barrel, not just the boy. Drinking 0.9Litres of water per 10kgs body weight can lead to water intoxication also known as water poisoning or dilutional hyponatremia due to excessive dilution of electrolytes in the body. This causes impairment of brain function and can lead to death. Assuming the boy weighed say 40 kgs, even consuming 4 litres of water could have killed him.

The boy was actually subjected to a well known method of torture known as "Water Torture", and the perpetrators should be arrested for torture and murder.

Hmmm maybe she learned this at one of Thailand's "black site" funded by US government for "rendition". There that rite was known as "waterboarding"

Yes, but we see so many of these types of stories in the Thai press. So so many

cheesy.gif That report is from the World Health Organisation who are concerned with diseases. Religion is purposely not on the list as despite it being euphemistically and metaphorically like a disease in many ways, technically it is not virus borne, it is stupidity borne, so it is omitted from this list. If this was not the case, trust me, it would be number one on the list by a LONG LONG way ! It is not secfular bigotry, it is fact. If you wish to ignore facts and keep following the flock of bleating sheep that 'believe' that is your prerogative. I prefer to believe in facts and science. The facts are that religion is responsible for a very large amount of fighting and murders the world over, mostly from Muslim extremists these days but throughout history religion has played a major part in death of people who don't follow the same make believe man in the sky as you do...

I am not surprised at this story.

My neighbor said he was being attacked by ghosts in his house at night. His family decided to take him to the local witch doctor who specializes in performing magic clearing out the ghosts and evil spirits from the body. Her other specialty is giving out lottery numbers. Being a curious type of guy I wanted to see this. Five people held this poor old man down on the floor while the witch doctor continually poured buckets of water in his face. He almost drowned. I though he did. They revived him. She declared he is free of ghosts and evil spirits. They took him in the house where he changed all his clothes then they burned the ones he had on during the ceremony while the witch doctor chanted. He came back home and three local monks arrived. They encompassed the entire outside of the house with white strings. Ghosts don't like white strings. The monks asked for candles, water and some kind of food. They stayed up all night expellng all the ghosts from the house. The next morning they declared the house would be free of ghose for five years.

and has it worked so far?

Religion is the number one cause of deaths worldwide. Ban it. And lock the parents up for a long time for killing their son and being idiots.

The K. Marx that you refer to was a German economist. His quote is more related to philosophy and economics than atheism.

Russia's "war against religion" wasn't in the name of atheism. It was in the name of socialism and communism.

You can call it whatever you like, but the fact is the organisation which was in charge of war against religion called "league of militant atheists" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/League_of_Militant_Atheists) So this war was in name of atheism.

And it proves my thesis that atheism is a sort of belief too. So if you want to ban religion you should ban atheism also.

so what?! any organization in the USSR had to fight for socialism, even "Balshoi" theater in Moscow was fighting for socialism, and most of it's actors were communist party members.

But it's true that destroying the religion is a goal of leftist propaganda all over the world, and people here who ask to ban religion are indoctrinated by it.

It was Comintern ruled by Stalin who contaminated Western intellectual society with this ideas in 1920-1950.

And people on this forum just don't realize that all there leftist ideas (who they consider there own) came from a few bastards, agents of Stalin's propaganda machine "Comintern" (Communist international).

Religion should be against the law.

only if atheism will be against the law too.

religious can't prove the god exists, and atheists can't prove he doesn't, so what is the difference?

and if we compare, there were much more murders in the name of atheism than in the name of god...

Religion should be against the law.

And what next? And who decides? What if not practicing religion is outlawed? See where this is heading?

Ignorant + Stupidity = DEATH .

They never use any common sense coffee1.gif

Who are "They". How does one define "Common Sense" and what is the standard? Drinking that amount of water may have made common sense to the person advocating drinking it, but then who knows?

Using "never" seems to be a finite term and denotes some mystical knowledge of All knowing, All seeing. I haven't met any mortal being that can claim those qualities.

Creepy history! In the middle of a jungle, doing a ceremony .. sounds a bit strange if you really has no idea what you are doing. Follow this self proclaimed "masters" can be very dangerous as we see. Sad people still trap yourself in such a kind of bullshit non sense.

PS RIP poor little boy...

Thay either leave kids in parked cars or vans, windows rolled up, doors locked to die from dehydration / roast to death or in this case baste to death with the opposite overhydration. Very sad.

The father of the science of toxicology, Paracelsus famously said "All things are poison, and nothing is without poison; only the dose permits something not to be poisonous." This was around the turn of the 16th century. 500 years later people still haven't figured this out. In all likelihood the spiritual tremors were actually the boy's body reacting to plummeting levels of electrolytes in his blood. A sad story illustrating that ignorance is not always bliss.
