US default unlikely, but Thailand must prepare for worst: WBank
CHAOWARAT YONGJIRANON
THE NATION

BANGKOK: -- The United States' much-anticipated debt-ceiling deadline of October 17 continues to cast a shadow over global markets. In an interview at the World Bank office in Bangkok, although Mathew Verghis, the bank's lead economist for Southeast Asia, said a default crisis was unlikely, if it does occur Thailand would see a volatile cash outflow that would cut the baht to levels seen after the US Federal Reserve's announcement on the tapering of quantitative easing.

Medical treatment extended to 90,000 flood-hit people nationwide
By English News

BANGKOK, Oct 14 – The Public Health Ministry has treated 90,000 patients affected by floods countrywide, deputy minister Sorawong Thienthong said yesterday.

He said mobile medical units had been dispatched to flood-hit areas in 26 provinces and found that, among the 90,000 patients, one-third of them suffered from athlete’s foot.

Many who lost their family members and properties suffered from mental distress and were given consultations, he said, adding that Public Health Ministry’s mobile units would increase their visit frequencies and stock sufficient medical supplies for treatment to people in flood-stricken areas.

Somyos Srijaranai, public health chief in Sa Kaeo province, said eight sub-districts in five districts in the province have been impacted by floods.

Mobile medical units have treated nearly 10,000 patients, 80 per cent of whom suffered from athlete’s foot and 683 people from depression.

Post-flood health services will be launched to prevent the spread of contagious diseases, he said. (MCOT online news)

Chachoengsao still overflowed by water

PNDAT561014001000101.jpg

BANGKOK, 14 October 2013 (NNT) - Recent reports have showed that Chachoengsao’s water situation is still at a critical level - especially in three tambons of Bang Khla district and Tambon Bang Rong in Khlong Kheun district. Water levels have reached as high as 80-150 cm; local residents have severely been affected.

High sea levels have made it difficult for water in the Bangpakong River to drain out to sea. The river itself had overflowed into local residents and nearby areas.

Deputy Governor of Chachoengsao Bandit Thewithiwarak revealed that water continues to flow in to the province. He expected it would take another month before water levels subside and the situation returns to normal.

Cabient to consider whether to extend ISA enforcement
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- The Cabinet meeting on Tuesday will consider extending the Internal Security Act (ISA) in three districts of Bangkok from September 18, according to Deputy Prime Minister Pracha Promnok.

Pracha said he has assigned the representatives of Peacekeeping Center to evaluate the on-going rally by student activists at the Urupong intersection and make a recommendation for the Cabinet as to whether the ISA should be extended or not. He said that the areas which are under the ISA's enforcement need to be defended by the government.

"I wish that protesters will shift their rally to Lumpini Park to avoid causing trouble to the people. I have been reported that demonstrators at Urupong belong to the same anti-government group which used to stage a blockade at Government House" he said.

A special Cabinet meeting last Wednesday decided to invoke the ISA in three districts of Bangkok until September 18.
