Car number plates with a background picture....legal or not?

We were on our way up to Bangkok this morning and got pulled over at a police check point by one of the BiB pointing to our number plate, so when we got out he spoke to my wife saying that our number plate was illegal as it has a background picture on in our case beach and sea, he continued to say that the only cars that can have these nice background pictures are people who buy them at the Government auctions!!! you know the very expensive numbers.... now we bought these background plates at one of the many motor accessory shops and no mention of it being illegal, and we have driven all over Thailand with them on for the last two years and driven through many police check points with no trouble at all.

They fined us 500 baht and we got a receipt and were told to remove them within 14 days replacing them with the original white background plates the car came with.

Does anyone know if this is correct, my Thai wife thought the policeman was correct after they had a long conversation, but I am not so sure.

Any one else got experience of this.

I see many cars al lover Thailand with these plates on surely they can not all be expensive government bought numbers!!!......

Cheers

They are not fake number plates it is the original number plates we were issued with but with a background picture instead of the plain white background.

The numbers and province of registration have not been changed.......

These picture plates can be bought everywhere....even Tesco lotus sells them!

If the plates did not come from the land transport authority they are fake, period. Do they have the seal shown by Upnotover?

Cutting your plates to fit in the EU style holders is also illegal.

You can buy legal picture background plates, but as you noted in the OP they as d*****d expensive sad.png

It is possible that while the numbers and letters represent the registration your plates may also be fake if they were not produced by a government listed 'plate manufacturer'...

As daft as it seems not any shop can create, copy or produce plates even with the correct numbers and letters.

The Government embossed 'stamp' as shown by upnotover is the hallmark of official plates.

If your plates were not issued by a registered 'plate manufacturer'... i.e. if you had them made a local shop its highly likely that they are not genuine and you were ticketed correctly.

The plates came from our main dealer when we bought the car, fitted after we had the red ones for a while and so they are genuine plates with the seal shown on them.

But will put the white background back... otherwise the next time it will be a 2,000 baht fine..... anything for a quiet life....

The plates are fake unless they have the goverment stamp, end of story. Have you guys noticed that the newer plates, starting from about 2 years ago have smaller fonts than the older plates?

Yes, and that was because the previous vendor made defective ones so the white reflective paint came off and the black letters became bleached. Must have cost the Land Transport Department a small fortune since they replaced the defective ones for free. I just bet that the LTD never went back to get repaid for all the defective plates they had to replace. They just got a new vendor and unfortunately it will take about another year to see if the new ones are any better

Even white ones are illegal if the government logo isn't ''pressed/stamped'' into the plate. You can't even touch up paint on the white ones. sad.png

In addition to that, it's also illegal to use a plate frame that covers the government stamped logo. It has to be visible..

If its a Legal Plate and the bottom right stamps legible whats the Problem.?. Cant be Colour, it glows red or flashes orange anyway from Brake n Idicator lights from other vehicles. Pedantic Copper had a few free Changs from the O.P. imo.biggrin.png

From the OP: "we bought these background plates at one of the many motor accessory shops" so no, not legal.

Leave the Guy Alone, his Tax Disk matches the plate so what. Crime of the Bloody Century is it. Cause Accidents ?,bet the Cops can't read any plate through their Illegal Tints.cheesy.gif

He is asking: is my plate legal or not. People here say 'illegal', and Ace of Pop says: 'leave the guy alone, who cares'. Obviously the OP does, after all he asked the question.

You can get provincial number plates that depict a scene that represents that province, for example Kalasin has dinosaurs. These must be purchased from the government.

That is a good idea. Do they also have Pattaya plates with a ladyboy or Phuket plates with a broken jet ski?

Perhaps a Buri Ram one with a Red Nosed Ferang in a Chang T Shirt, and Bargirl would make a nice Change.biggrin.png

Can have anything pictured on it guess but the fact remains that unless the plate was issued by the Land Transport Dept it would be considered illegal and thus open for police people issuing fines.......

Hence the OP's question and realistic non idiotic answers....... The pretty plate he purchased is illegal and as such was given a fine accordingly.

So is that plate surround illegal on the Ford, it covers some of the stamp ?

Think the OP just got unlucky. Sure it might be an illegal plate but how many fully legal cars, in every respect are actually on the roads out here ? From illegal window tint to extra wide wheels, there are so many infringements it is just which policeman stops you and knows which laws :)
