Import Engine / Trans

Featured Replies

Found a good deal on a take-out Chev LSX and 4L80E.

Anyone ever done this and it worked out ??? Or will I have the same luck as importing a complete car - meaning lots of luck ... and it's all bad.

PM PhilipM, I think thats his name, has a speed shop here, he might know the route to take.

Wish you luck with that. smile.png

Thanks TA

Will try and track him down. Maybe get a hot rod in LOS yet !!!

Let us know how this goes. It should be possible, but you might get raped in taxes.

Make sure you get a bill of sale with the engine number on it for when you swap it into a car. You need this to register the new engine and make it legal.

That is my biggest concern.

Freight from Canada not too dear, but what happens here is the major unknown.

If I get kissed before I get bent over, so much the better.

I know a guy that had a v8 racing engine and transmission shipped over from the US with a cost of about $20K USD. All in he said the shipping and "taxes" here came to about 200K. Not sure of any other details as I didn't inquire further, but I think that was with a helping hand locally.

I am currently considering importing a 2nd hand Toyota Diesel V8 from the US.

Its a 1VD engine and I just cannot find it in the Thai market.

The cost of the engine and the shipping is fairly low.

But I am also wondering about what will happen (and to what price) if and when I try to clear customs in Bangkok.

Thats when ''their'' fun begins. sad.png

Maybe using a professional agent might mitigate the fun factor. Dunno

Anyway, is there a standard duty % to be paid for 2nd hand Jap engines imported from the US?

And 7% VAT on top?

You putting this into your boat, Melvin?

Doing what is - at this point - just a little checking, I have been unable to get a clear answer to costs once the items land in Thailand.

When told that a bill of sale will be with arriving, was told - in not too many words - "Will look at this and decide then"

Kind of leave the whole question very open ended - and subject to an unpleasant feeling in the nether regions.

Will keep on trying to get an answer - getting used to the large bump on my head.

right, that is the idea, iff I can get hold of the mill at a reasonable price,

the US company charges about 1300 USD delivered to BKK (customs warehouse)

not bad

then what will happen to what price when going through customs is an open question

great mill, about 300 hp and 430 (or was it 340?) Nm from 1200 rpm upwards

right, I have the same feelings

the US company has a professional agent in BKK that can do the clearance and transport it to my doorstep

guess I'll ask for a binding quote including duty/customs.

U can import any kind of parts, there is no probs. Easly if you buy your engine in Japan. But also from other countries. Al the engines including V8s they sell in Bang Phi are imported. The engine you import should be a second hand one (not good looking)

Seedy,

It is actually not that difficult to import engines and transmissions.

My very best advice for you is to ask the sender/seller to include a invoice, serial no., receipt with the engine code in the package.

Now just so i am clear, you MUST expect to pay duties for the custom official....in many of my cases you simply have to engage them in a friendly, calm manner and as Thais are very good at doing....always repeat and ask "please help me".

I have had cases where they first asked for B30,000 for duty and i ended up paying about 20% of that by just using a few selected words and say it is to muchh i cannot afford this.

in your case it is also second hand and say i also have to pay to make sure it can start etc etc...he will get what you are saying.

last words of encouragement.....it is in there interest to let you pay duty (either small or large) or else you dont get what you bought and they dont get the import duties as no one else will buy it.

other than that....i will just say try to be "Thai" as possible----laugh things out, be calm, ask for help, be polite and let things roll.

:)

Thanks Philip. Your advice is very much appreciated.

In all my dealing with the Thai people I have adopted this philosophy. Always smile, speak softly, never get in a hurry, always ask if they can help you ... stood me in good steed. Great advice given to me my first year by a long-time expat.

Just have to wait for the estate to settle and I can move forward.

Be Well.

in my case there should not really be any duty be paid,

mechanical machinery including engines for boats are excempt from duty

but I kind of doubt they will just stamp the papers and let me go

Wonder if I tell them it is for my rice harvester if they will let it in duty free !!!
