Park to close temporarily

SI SA KET: -- Khao Phra Wihan National Park in Si Sa Ket will close today as a precaution before the International Court of Justice rules on the Preah Vihear Temple dispute between Thailand and Cambodia later this month.

"We don't want any violence to erupt before or after judgement day," chief warden Saksit Phonsabsiri said yesterday.

The park on the Thai approach to the mountain temple will reopen when the situation around the border returns to normal, he said.

A Dhamma Yatra group of six people led by Saman Sringarm that arrived at the park from Kantharalak district to defend Preah Vihear and nearby Mon Ton Burapha were not allowed to buy admission tickets because their visit was not for tourism.

A few hours later, soldiers escorted them to Pha-Mo-E-Dang to avoid any violence. However, the other protest group will be allowed to demonstrate only in the controlled area.

Loei villagers to rally at SET over mine
The Nation

30218648-01_big.jpg

BANGKOK: -- A group of 50 villagers from Loei will rally at the Stock Exchange of Thailand today to protest against a gold-digging company's attempt to open another mine.

"The fact is local people were not allowed to join the public hearing that was held on September 8," Jatuphat Boonphattararaksa, a coordinator of the student activist Dao Din group, said yesterday.

"We were blocked by 700 police," he said.

The group would inform the shareholders of Tongkah Harbour, the parent of Tungkum Co, that the public hearing for the new gold mining lease was not as smooth as the company had reported to the SET.

The hearing was part of the environmental and health impact assessment (EHIA) required by the Constitution for a project that might be harmful to the environment and people's health.

The company must conduct the EHIA to seek an operating permit for the new mine.

The September public hearing was held to gather opinions and concerns from the surrounding community. Some local people were allowed to join but a group of 600 members of the Khon Rak Ban Kerd group that opposed the project was blocked.

The company received a licence in 1991 to search for gold on more than 270,000 rai of land in Loei. The company has engaged in actual gold mining on more than 1,300 rai. It was ordered by the Industry Ministry to suspend its activities as the mine's tailing pond needed maintenance.

However, managing director Bundit Sangsaree-thamm has said the company plans to end gold extraction in Loei within five years and move to Laos because of the strong resistance from local people and its heavy financial burden. There is also no guarantee that the amount of ore remaining in this site would be enough to justify significant further investment.

Volunteer killed by blast at train station
Narong Nuansakul
The Nation

Unrest continued in the deep South with bomb attacks over the weekend.

NARATHIWAT: --Yesterday an explosion near a train station in Narathiwat's Sungai Padi district killed territorial-defence volunteer Fandee Jeh-arong, 31.

Fandee headed a team guarding Toh Deng Train Station. His eight subordinates were unharmed.

Police said a homemade device weighing about five kilograms was set off soon after 6am when Fandee was about to open a steel gate for a train arriving from

Sungai Kolok Train Station. He died from his wounds at a local hospital.

The blast left a three-feet-deep and six-feet-wide hole in the ground near the gate, which was 200 metres from the train station.

Police believe the ambush was staged to fan violence in the southern border provinces, which has dragged on in the region for about a decade.

Even though Thai authorities entered into peace talks with the Barisan Revolusi Nasional earlier this year, hostilities have not ceased.

On Saturday night, a five-kilogram bomb blew up in front of a mosque in the same province, wounding two privates when they were patrolling along a local road.

Lieutenant Ekachai Nakchum, who witnessed the attack, said he believed his team was targeted because it was conducting the patrol past the same spot every night.

However, he said his team members including Piyapong Chuchana and Boonchu Sawangwong were not discouraged.

"Piyapong and Boonchu are now in safe condition. They will go back on duty after they recover," he said.

Last week, a blast annihilated a team of three police including respected bomb disposal expert Shaen Warongphaisit.
