BANGKOK: -- In response to the many "whistle-blowing" activities being organised to show disapproval of the government's amnesty bill, a Thai software company, Innovation Plus, has developed an application that enables people to blow a whistle on their smartphones.

Nakrin Lerdnamwong, the app developer, said that as whistle-blowing had become the call sign for those protesting against the amnesty bill, he had come up with the app idea, so that people could blow their whistles anywhere and at anytime.

"People who are against the amnesty bill can blow a whistle online as well," said Nakrin.

To use the app, users simply press a button to make the whistle sound. Once this is done, the programme will collect each hit and report it to a map showing how many people are using the app and where they are.

"Using the whistle-blowing app, we can indicate where the person using it is, no matter whether they are in Thailand or in another country," said Nakrin.

Just one hour after the app was launched on Thursday, there were more than 400 whistle-blowing hits. Nakrin said he hoped to get as many as 100-million hits and would produce the map to show where the whistle-blowers were.

"There are so many people who want to attend the Democrat Party rally and show their support, but not all of them have time or are physically able. This app will at least help them play a part," said Nakrin.

The app is now available at Google Play for Android smartphone. It can also be accessed at www.whistleforthai.com using iPhone or PC.

Whistle blowing would be an excellent thing for Thais to get excited about, if they understood the meaning. by the description of the app - they don't. Another club for the collective.

This is more like a digital petition, which is at least some form of legitimate protest.

Good point.

Maybe this is a way of side-tracking censorship, just a whistle blowing app!

Call it a petition and maybe it gets clamped down on, maybe.

Blew the whistle every time I clicked, so possible 1 person could add many whistles - difficult to say for sure without checking the code.

So the counter might not be exactly accurate.

Interesting. Very good point.

You would hope they built in some recognition SW otherwise it's worthless.

Great! Yet another app that provides your identity and location to someone you don't know.

If you use a debit or credit card, it's a moot point. Most of us are already "traceable" in one form or another.

"I'm not paranoid, so stop looking at me!" :)

100 million hits? Dream on. Though I do suspect the red stormtroopers might want a look at the map.

I would have thought that the "red stormtroopers" could, if they wish, read the newspapers to find that out.

I've got another app for those people that are likely to use a "whistle app".

Take two Smart Phones (i phones preferably) and loosely wrap a piece of duct tape round one end only (this is important that you do this otherwise it won't work, do not tape in the middle, or both ends)

Right, Now hold one phone only and vigorously shake. Congratulations you have a HiSo Clapper!

Good on Khun Nakrin because one thing Bangkok is suffering from is a lack of noise. biggrin.png

I was parking in a hotel the other day and the security guard had one of those flashing red batons that, when you pressed a button on the side, emitted a whistle sound exactly the same as usual blown version we all know and love. So now the buggers don't even have to save up enough puff to give it the big one.

On a side note..
