getting an Australian death certificate from 2007?

A close thai friend has a major problem her Australian husband died in 2007 whilst on a trip back to melbourne but she never received a death certificate ,

recently she bought a new condo but the land office wont give her the Chanut as her tabien Baan has her old married name on it although her ID card, passport , bank accounts and business papers are all back in her maiden name ,,

the land office and local legal advice is that she needs a copy of the Australian death certificate .

We have spoken to the Australian embassy in bangkok and they told her to contact Victoria birth deaths and marriage in melbourne ,, I have helped her due to the language difficulties but they cant help as she is in thailand and cannot travel to melbourne (no visa) and expensive ,

i tried doing it online but unless you are an australian citizen thats also not an option!!!!!

This is also a problem if she ever wanted to re marry .. if the australian embassy cant or wont help??? how can she get this important document ,,,

Does the deceased husband have any brothers or sisters alive in Australia?

If the deceased husband have children living in Australia, maybe they have a facebook account and you can contact them through social Media.

OP: I understand you can apply by mail ouitside of Australia using a marriage certificate to confirm the relationship to the deceased, she will also need to provide certified copies of her Thai ID. From the URL below:

Applying from outside Australia
You can have photocopies of your identity documents certified by an Australian consulate or embassy official, a Notary Public or a local member of police. If any identity documents are not written in English, you must also provide a certified translation. The Registry will only accept translations by an accredited translator.

Thanks guys

I have spoken today to a very helpful australian consular official at the embassy in BKK ,, they dont have access to the BDM database for Victoria , so what my friend has to do is make a postal application ,, first she will have to have her Thai marriage certificate translated into English , then take that and her Thai ID,Thai Passport etc to the consular official who will verify and stamp it , then she can make a postal application from Thailand its not that easy as payment arrangments have to be worked out ??? and the documents she can supply are not what is listed for Oz citizens but the lady at the embassy will try and facilitate the connection between my friend and Victoria BDM .

You forgot to mention the 3 or 4 thousand baht she will have to pay for notorary services at the embassy. About $20 per page I think.

Australian embassy can be very helpful and are probably better to deal with than many embassys but they do know how to charge.

Rather than relying on the Embassy, better to call/email BDM and confirm that notarised and translated Thai ID is acceptable. Also cross check that death certificate can be sent to Thailand via registered mail and the cost. if calling, confirm your understanding in an email to BDM & print out for sending with application. She can use her own credit card, if not, you can use your CC details in the application form (submit a brief letter countersigned explaining why with the application).

I know & gave OP the link, my error. The app form only talks to mailing Death Certificate within Australia, that's why highlighted to sort out this bit of detail

Victorian BDM are under the Department of Justice. All government offices have customer Service Level Agreements. set by the Minister, to which they should comply. I am personally aware of this matter as I sold a multi million dollar IT application to a Vic Government department, one of the business case drivers was to address complaints, by the Minister, of non compliance for customer SLA/KPI

If I were in your situation I would write a brief outline of the issues you are facing and ask for a resolution in a registered letter that includes your email address to:

Greg Wilson, Secretary

Department of Justice

GPO Box 4356

Melbourne VIC 3000
