Ranong Date -rape Sales...

Last night a male friend told me a distressing tale about his visa run to Ranong last week. The wharf rats at Victoria Point in Myanmar (opposite Ranong) climbed onto his boat -docked at the pier -and offered for sale, apart from the usual Viagra, whisky, etc - "KO" pills or "knock-out" powder - in other words, "Date Rape" drugs. :o

Apparently it is available in packs of 5 powder satchets for a few hundred baht a pop........ Has anyone else heard of this highly dangerous product for sale at "visa tour" destinations?

Very disturbing! I wonder why they think visa runners would be interested in this stuff?

I haven't seen or heard about anything like this in Pattaya, or on my border runs to Ban Laem. Sounds like maybe the BiB should be tipped off ?

Well.. it's actually being sold happening in Myanmar .. not in Thailand, so BiB would only be able to search people coming back from there.. which would be a start..

totster :o

Hardly a big deal.. Roofies are available right in Patong !!

I found out last trip that Ketamine is openly sold in Ranong also.. 50 baht a ampule.. proper pharm sealed amps.. Of course roofies and other fast acting memory loss sedatives will be available..

Just because they're selling them doesn't mean they are targeting potential rapists, these drugs are surprisingly popular among abusers and there's definatley a market now it's harder to get hold of in Thailand. By informing the authorities your only increasing the chances of people being busted with excess whiskey, viagra etc. I should imagine of the total number of people that missuse rohpnol and other such drugs only a very small fraction use them for what you are implying.

There have been plenty of reports of people getting some kind of knock-out drug in Bangkok and Pattaya. What they were given, I don't know, but what they usually lost was their money.

Ok true, but I don't think telling the police and having border runners have to put up with increased chances of being searched is the key.

Criminals such as muggers or rapists will find a way to carry out their crimes regardless, informing the police force of smuggling routes is not the solution, besides i'm sure they're fully aware of the contraband that passes through.

Why would informing the police of a crime be a bad thing? Inconveniencing a few guys renewing their visas seems harmless in comparison to keeping out potentially nasty drugs.

Khutan - nice moderating. A warning before possibly having to censor or delete something. Nice. :o

Yeah, but knock-out drugs are used for rape and muggings. And I agree, it is nothing new here. I also agree that it seems rather callous to suggest that renewing one's visa is more important than informing the police about such drugs. However, informing the police here will do little good.

Interesting input..... for whatever reason it is purchased, I'm most disturbed at the number of reported robberies taking place with the use of this drug, not to mention unreported rapes.

The fact that it is so easily available is bad news for everyone - women and men are both victims ... how many women are raped and how many guys end up in hospital or in the gutter with their possessions stripped from them? EVIL!!

Hopefully something will be done to to clean it up! :o
