Whilst there are no doubt many violent characters in that lovely city, I do not buy the fact that he was just walking along, minding his own business, and suddenly gets attacked out of nowhere.

Unrelated: I think at age 54 it is time to hang up the wife-beater.

Well it's been happening in USA for some time now and is referred to as a gameblink.png . Let's hope the Thai teenagers don't get any ideasermm.gif

A bit different though; the "game" is to punch someone out cold with a single blow. This was obviously not the case here.

I wasn't referring to the difference in nature of the attack, I was responding to the suggestion that it's impossible to believe that people carry out totally random attacks without any apparent motive?

Happened in Aus recently. Completely random, completely motiveless, irrational "king hit" in the street on a completely random passer by, killed him.

You can imagine the parents and family of the deceased and how they feel about that.

The anger people feel is bubbling to the surface, fuelled by drugs and alcohol.

It happens, and more frequently than you imagine. More often than not it's drug-related - a man wired on ya ba for several days loses most of his perspective and can easily become paranoid. Neither is it a recent phenomenon: I was threatened for no apparent reason by a tuk-tuk driver wielding a four-by-four twenty-five years ago. He was restrained by other drivers.

And what's wrong with the wife-beater? Some apparel just never goes out of fashion.

Is that a lit area of beach at night? Gotta be careful.

Yes it's well lit, and in the day and evening it's quite a busy tourist area. But at 3:30am all the restaurants are closed and is usually populated by ladyboys, ladies of the night, and their prospective customers. It's also a popular place for Thais to hang out a bit further south, blast music from their trucks and generally party. There are also a few resident Thais (and a few Westerners) who seem to live on the beach as down and outs in that area around Soi 2 - Chang is the basic diet.

Cannot draw any conclusions as to why he got assaulted, but I would be reluctant to walk that area anything past 1:00am when it starts to quiet down. Even riding a bike you risk ladyboys actually following you on their bikes and doing the "I go with you" pickup line.

When the powers that be in their infinite wisdom started removing all the benches along beach road a year or so ago, Hacking the shade trees (supposedly both were to surpress crime. That is what officer told me when I protested this less than intelligent action), I knew it wouldn't make a difference in crime.

I suggested perhaps the police should do actual patrols. Get off their backsides, walk the beaches, get out of the stations. There are cameras installed at various places, but I doubt if many are connected, and even if they are, no one watches them. 100 meters from police station? Maybe they could work a deal with perps to do assaults closer to the station....

Whilst I do find it somewhat reprehensible that some posters on this forum will immediately jump to their own conclusions, I do wonder what the hell he was doing walking around at that time of night...!

If they ever catch him it will be a suspended sentence for sure!

It really got a lot safer now with the tourist court!

I would imagine the assailant is mentally disturbed in some way, and, if so, this would be reflected in any sentence. If it was due to drugs I would imagine he will be treated harshly as most drug related offences are here.

Yes, while it would be silly to imagine that the introduction of tourist courts will make the place a lot safer, it's an indication that, finally, something is being done about the inevitable rising rate crime rate in a place like Pattaya.

So Thai style when fighting is to 1. hit a woman or child 2. hit the elderly 3. kick while on the ground or 4. hit from behind/the side 5. three or more Thais to 1 farang (inclusive of any of the previous 4)....or am I mising something here?? I have never had a fight in Thailand, so can anyone with experience tell me whether they have ever had a fight with a Thai one on one, face to face?

Having seen and heard for the last 10 years with regard to Thai blokes...I doubt if there are many "single" knock out artists here...THANK GOD...

Yes the 54 yr old ELDERLY gentleman should have been tucked up in bed with his hot water bottle hours ago. When you reach 35 you should be in doors having dinner and getting your pajamas on, nice cup of warm milk and a biscuit then it's off to bed. Leave recreation and socialising to the young don't want senior citizens enjoying themselves, they will never grow into grumpy old men that way.

That's not the Thai way. Never one-on-one. Always mob-handed or tooled-up at the very least. Fight to kill!
