Popular Post webfact
Pheu Thai spokesman gets one-year jailterm without suspensionBANGKOK: -- The Appeals Court on Thursday sentenced Pheu Thai party spokesman Prompong Nopparit and another Pheu Thai member to one-year imprisonment without suspension after finding them guilty of defaming the former president of the Constitution Court.Earlier in June, Prompong and Kiat-udom Menasawat, a former Pheu Thai MP, were sentenced by the Criminal Court to one year imprisonment and fined 50,000 baht each but the jailterm was suspended for two years. The Appeals Court refused to give the duo suspended jailterm citing that both of them are men of respect and with conscience and, therefore, should be a role model for the other people. But instead, they chose to make malicious accusations against the plaintiff, Mr Wasant Soipisut, the former president of the Constitution Court, in total disregard of the damages rendered to the judiciary, said the court.Even after the two Pheu Thai members were charged with defamation, they were not repentant and continued to attack Mr Wasant in a way which might cause the public to lose faith in the court.Hence, the Appeals Court handed down one-year imprisonment without any suspension on the two defendants. The two defendants have asked for a bail which is yet to be approved by the court.Source: http://englishnews.thaipbs.or.th/pheu-thai-spokesman-gets-one-year-jailterm-without-suspension/ -- Thai PBS 2013-12-12

Zolt
I haven't ever heard of anyone else doing real jail time for slander in a developed country. In Thailand too politicians slander each other all the time too, but apparently the libel laws only start to grow some teeth when the victim is a powerful judge. Well by slandering the judge, he was by extension, slandering the whole justice system. So yeah, if I were a judge and someone slandered me, I would throw the book at the defendant. Enjoy prison! Or perhaps the PTP are going to criticize this judgement and not accept it because it didn't go their way.
MaxLee
Pheu Thai spokesman gets one-year jailterm without suspension So then that means, "inactive for one year, for making merit and whatever backstabbing manner, and see you again next year..." Thaksin's lap dogs, there IS NO such thing as political punishment for high status feudal family members and lap dogs.

It would be the first time that a rich person has spent any time in jail they usually leave the country for sunnier places like Dubai or Singapore. But you have heard of contempt of court, and suspension of sentences cancelled when offenders persist in their crimes. If you research "parliamentary immunity" you will understand how politicians manage to avoid prosecution, and why others decline to offer false accusation.

Well Thaksin won some against Sondhi while not being in the country for 'self-excile' reasons. Also Abhisit won a case against Jatuporn. So the victim can be anyone, common people just like you and me

The two are not MPs, but 'just' Pheu Thai party members. Mind you, as one is described as 'ex-MP' does this sentence mean he will be unable to stand as candidate the 2nd of February 2014? It would appear so. However, I can see no reason he can't continue to be the spokesperson for PTP from inside prison. With the number of party members incarcerated likely to be increasing exponentially, it would even seem appropriate.
Morakot
Is there any background on this. Did the slander by the MPs happen inside or outside parliament?

DrDweeb
The threat of gaol time is intended to be a deterrent Serving gaol time is a punishment. It would serve Thailand no end of good to start dumping clowns like this guy (and TS, Jutaporn and about 100 others we can all name from both sides of the spectrum) for that matter in gaol. Were the threat to become suddenly real, improved behaviour might result. Personally, I would put YS in gaol for lying to parliment, deriliction of duty and contempt and possibly treason. It is unclear to me how a leader of government is openly allowed to be directed from abroad by a convicted felon, without legal repercussions. Skyping to cabinet meetings? I ask you, really? She is TS's "clone" so she should do TS's time since TS is a runaway. Trust me, this would straighten up a lot of these leeches pretty quick smart.
otherstuff1957
I would be very surprised if he isn't allowed to make bail for the whole period of his sentence. The public loss of face will probably be considered to be punishment enough.

Just shows you how much power the rich BKK elites have! Meanwhile, someone just got 6 years 8 months in jail for 'attempting to commit the crime of lese majeste'. See the BKK Post report: 'Red-shirt sentenced for lese majeste'. Makes this Prompong nonsense pale into insignificance really.
