The caretaker government yesterday held a public forum

BANGKOK: -- Democratic Alliance Against Dictatorship (DAAD) chairwoman Thida Thavornsret yesterday likened the refusal of some protesters to accept the one-person, one-vote system to a failure to treat all humans as equal.

"If you can't accept the one-man one-vote system, I would like to ask you to ponder whether you think some groups of humans are more valuable than others," she said.

She also described the People's Council, proposed by the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC), as an Elite Council.

Thida announced a clear stance of the DAAD, or red shirts.

"We disagree with the so-called People's Council. We don't think the government should resign," she said at a government-hosted forum.

The forum was held as the government, led by Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, sought to explore ways to end the ongoing political crisis.

After Yingluck called the House dissolution on December 9, massive anti-government rallies are still going on. The PDRC, which leads the protest, has demanded the establishment of a People's Council to pave way for a political reform before the next general election takes place.

But Thida said yesterday the DAAD wished to see the next election staged on February 2, as scheduled.

Speaking at the same seminar, Bhum Jai Thai Party's leading member Songsak Thongsri suggested that if the government stepped back a bit, all sides would be able to lay down the rule for every party to accept before the poll was held.

"This way, Thailand will be able to move ahead," he said.

Dr Jade Donavanik from the Siam University, who also attended the forum, said since people were trying to find solutions out of the impasse, an election should not the set on February 2 only.

"Several times, the government insists that something cannot be done legally, but look at the charter amendment on the formation of the Senate, the government which had earlier insisted that the law cannot be withdrawn from the Royal consideration, finally withdrew it," he said.

Human rights activist Gothom Arya also joined the government-hosted forum. There, he thanked the PDRC for bringing about an unprecedented political awakening.

He emphasised that political reform needed a continuous process to be successful and so efforts for reform must carry on.

"This process should also engage people and encourage them to express their opinions. The implementation of reform should be clear-cut and tangible," he said.

Regarding the question of whether reform should be done before or after the general election, he said, "Let's do whatever can be done first. Start from now.

"For those that need time to complete, we can do it later but we must do it…The government should not buy time and the Democrats should not boycott the election."

Thida is a Thaksin paid stooge

Yes, despite having claimed the opposite a couple of years back, she now seems remarkably in-step with Dubai's instructions.

Ah, fascists fighting each other. Both intolerant and blind to any thinking but there own. Neither cares about anyone who won't follow their lead.

Spot On. How can this country advance with the attitudes that prevail ?

Let's not forget too the face aspect which makes compromise a dirty word.

"If you can't accept the one-man one-vote system, I would like to ask you to ponder whether you think some groups of humans are more valuable than others," fair point I'd say

It is a fair point. But since when has Suthep said that he doesn't accept the one-man one-vote system?

Thida is a Thaksin paid stooge

Standard line from the Thaksin hater's.

I support change, I support new elections, I support democracy, I support one man one vote.

Suthep the oxygen thief supports himself, his mates, his bank balance, and the idea that Thai people from the north are not equal to those from the south, Talk to your Thai wife/gf, she will tell you the same thing, Thai people from the south look down on any other Thai people and not the same, so how could Suthep form any kind of FAIR PEOPLES COUNCIL??? he wants an elite council at the cost of democracy, and Mark needs to take the dems too the elections and the people of Thailand will tell all who they want as the government...

For 500 baht what opinion would you like? The Thaksin method.

"If you can't accept the one-man one-vote system, I would like to ask you to ponder whether you think some groups of humans are more valuable than others," fair point I'd say

Fair point indeed.

But clearly different groups of humans are more valuable than others. Would a 'random group of 10' highly skilled doctors have more value than a 'random group of 10 unskilled workers'

I guess it depends on how value is defined and by whom.

In Thailand you are neither born nor do you die an equal (in value?) to your peers

yes that is true... but do we assign, say, 5 votes to a Doctor and 1 to a farmer? or do we say well the Doctor, with his/her, more proficient brain should be able to convince the farmer? the problem is there are 'Doctors' on either side

maybe there is a better system than 'one man one vote' but I don't see it in the developed world let alone a fledgling world like Thailand. The emphasis, surely, is a non-corrupt election process but Dear Leader Suthep has already stated:

"I don't respect 'farangs'. We do not have to surrender to them,"

with regard to Election Monitors from outside Thailand - the very thing he states he wants - an unbiased and uncorrupt election

when he proposed an unelected 'peoples council' and attempted a coup against a democratically elected government? anyway we now have a date by Royal Decree for Feb 2nd and the Military have respected that and I'd suggest Suthep should too

But since when has real democracy inferred that the vote of '10 highly skilled doctors' trumps that of '10 unskilled workers?'

The whole odious assertion that Thailand needs a fast-track, 'special council' of 'selected' individuals rather than use the normal processes of making sure your democratically elected representatives make the changes that allows real democracy to develop in Thailand. Although it may be a bit of a stretch but maybe Suthep has read up on history and appreciates the necessity of Oliver Cromwell's or George Washington's actions on the way to democracy... but I doubt it. A coup is a coup.

He proposed an unelected peoples council to get the required reforms done, followed by elections - with one-man one vote.

Yes, and that would include all of those human beings who were "cleaned" from the system in an attempt to rid the country of its drug problem ... right?

Well that's the problem you see. As a long-time resident of this decidedly un-sceptred fiefdom, where if you offer a local 500 baht today or 5000 baht tomorrow, they INVARIABLY take the 500 baht NOW, those that swear allegiance to Democrats, be it PAD, PDRC or whatever, are royally buggered every time since they cost at least 1000 baht each... being doctors and scholars and all.

TRT, PTP, DAAD always gets 2 for the price of 1.

And Wins.

Again.

,,, and AGAIN!

Obviously, yes, you have to be a Thaksin paid stooge to not want an unelected council with the ability to hand out death penalty to corrupt politicians, like the supreme leader Suthep is wisely requesting. Who in their right mind would say otherwise?

Yes well, a Thaksin paid stooge (government ministers) being directed by an unelected wanted criminal would have no difficulty in saying whatever the paymaster requires. Points of principle not really on the agenda.

Taksins claws back vote money, with kickbacks from projects his government initiates. Or did you really think the 2.2 trillion baht loan would all be spent for the sole benefit of the Thai people. If you can write or read thai there are many youtube or facebook videos showing literally massive stacks of cash being given out in return for rally and voting participation.

A large number of foreigners cannot access thai mainstream media. Once you can you can see the rampant votebuying - on all sides.
