Tesco Lotus opens 'No Bag' store on Phuket's Saiyuan Road



PHUKET: -- Tesco Lotus has opened a “No Bag Store” for the first time on Saiyuan Road in Naiharn – its pilot store along with one recently opened in Koh Samui.

“We want to convince customers to shop without plastic bags. Hence we are piloting the “No Bag Stores” in Koh Samui and Phuket” said Tesco Lotus Head of Public Affairs Charkrit Direkwattanachai.

No plastic bags are available from the store, but reusable bags are available for purchase.

To encourage customers to join the spirit of “no bag”, the company is offering 20 “Green Points” for a basket of shopping without using plastic bags.

The Green Points system works through Clubcard, the Tesco Lotus loyalty card. Clubcard points are converted to cash coupons and mailed to customers every quarter.

Also, at the Saiyuan store, an additional “20 satang per no bag transaction” will be donated to the local Wat Sawang Arom school.

The trial looks set to continue and be rolled out to other stores in prime tourist areas.

Here in South Australia plastic bags were banned from use in any shop about 3 years ago. Cloth bags are sold in the stores at a cheap price. There are also cloth "cooler bags" lined with plastic and insulation to keep frozen and cold foods in good orger for at least a couple of hours. NOW! This will shock you!!! Every bottle,and can, either glass or plastic, used to sell water, soft drinks, fruit juices, beer etc. has a 10cents Deposit on it. There are many depots where these items can be taken back to and the deposit returned. Now there are no bottles etc. on our beaches or lining the roadways.

Finally. Hopefully this will spread to other stores across the Kingdom. I remember in the US when they introduced deposits on bottles and cans. A lot of people complained, but guess what. My next canoe trip down the river saw NO bottles or cans in the water. None along the roads. Heck, in college, we use to find where the big parties were and go around collecting up the cans/bottles. We'd get enough to buy a case of beer!

Rwanda has outlawed all plastic bags. Can't even bring them in on your plane. Traveling around was fantastic.

Germany is well ahead of the pack - in German stores there is an automatic machine near the door, and each plastic bottle has a bar code. The machine scans and crushes the bottle and issues a voucher for the returned deposits.

Very positive, and kudos to Tesco for trying it. The need to establish respect for the environment here is tremendous. Not sure why so many people think it is ok to foul such a beautiful land. Yes, very good first step. I drove down a road just after a rain storm earlier this year here in Pattaya. The storm drain covers were 100% blocked with plastic bags. They were everywhere. It was disgusting.

I refuse plastic bags as much as I can. Just don't need one when buying only a coke at 7-11.

I rebagged them into three and left her to deal with the six used-but-not-used bags. Can you imagine a typical Thai shopper facing a B90 charge for bagging their items?

I have seen the "no bags" slogan in our Lotus store quite a while ago.

The difference seems to be, that in this Phuket store they do not even have throw away bags.

But i did read one thing that was interesting, if that plastic bag area the size of Texas does not exists that is great news. Does not mean we don't need to ban plastic as it stays too long in the environment but its great news if true.
