Popular Post webfact
Tesco Lotus opens 'No Bag' store on Phuket's Saiyuan RoadPHUKET: -- Tesco Lotus has opened a “No Bag Store” for the first time on Saiyuan Road in Naiharn – its pilot store along with one recently opened in Koh Samui.“We want to convince customers to shop without plastic bags. Hence we are piloting the “No Bag Stores” in Koh Samui and Phuket” said Tesco Lotus Head of Public Affairs Charkrit Direkwattanachai. No plastic bags are available from the store, but reusable bags are available for purchase. To encourage customers to join the spirit of “no bag”, the company is offering 20 “Green Points” for a basket of shopping without using plastic bags. The Green Points system works through Clubcard, the Tesco Lotus loyalty card. Clubcard points are converted to cash coupons and mailed to customers every quarter. Also, at the Saiyuan store, an additional “20 satang per no bag transaction” will be donated to the local Wat Sawang Arom school. The trial looks set to continue and be rolled out to other stores in prime tourist areas. Popular Post NeverSure
Once you get some good reusable bags, you never want plastic again, for a variety of reasons. If they offer good firm cloth bags with handles for sale, they hold so much more and are so much easier to handle. They also don't tip over easily in the car. I have been using the same bags for about a year now with no signs of wear. Personally I would outlaw all plastic bags, cups and straws and require that they be made of paper the way they used to be. At least paper is biodegradable and will go away with time. Paper is made from crap wood scraps, and is even recycled into new products, such as making drinking cups from used newspapers. Trees are a renewable resource and eventually become fertilizer when thrown away. In the West where people have been taught to hate litter, we actually get 2 garbage cans. One is for garbage and the other is for anything that can be recycled. Kudos to Tesco.

Yep, then we'll go back to Paper Straws and Paper comes from TREES, so the Tree Huggers will have a fit over that too. This is simply a CHEAPSKATE Trick by Tesco to get out of supplying Biodegradable Plastic Bags and con customers into PAYING for their so-called Eco-Friendly bags.

Popular Post Sheppo
Here in South Australia plastic bags were banned from use in any shop about 3 years ago. Cloth bags are sold in the stores at a cheap price. There are also cloth "cooler bags" lined with plastic and insulation to keep frozen and cold foods in good orger for at least a couple of hours. I take 5 bags to Supermarket each weekly shopping day. NOW! This will shock you!!! Every bottle, and can, either glass or plastic, used to sell water, soft drinks, fruit juices, beer etc. has a 10cents Deposit on it. There are many depots where these items can be taken back to and the deposit returned. Now there are no bottles etc. on our beaches or lining the roadways.
Estrada
15 years ago my Rotary Club introduced the "Bring Your Bag Project" at the Printemps Supermarket at Seri Centre. At that time we could not convince Tesco to help us with the project. It is a pity that it took Tesco 15 years to copy our idea.

craigt3365
Finally. Hopefully this will spread to other stores across the Kingdom. I remember in the US when they introduced deposits on bottles and cans. A lot of people complained, but guess what. My next canoe trip down the river saw NO bottles or cans in the water. None along the roads. Heck, in college, we use to find where the big parties were and go around collecting up the cans/bottles. We'd get enough to buy a case of beer! Rwanda has outlawed all plastic bags. Can't even bring them in on your plane. Traveling around was fantastic. Congrats on Tesco for this bold move.
jpeg
Oh that'll make a huge benefit for the environment. There's never anyone in there because there's sod all in there to buy. Pah! Tesco! Doesn't carry any 'farang' stuff, not even bloody butter. Right in a farangland area. Useless. No wonder they're going tits up in the UK.
harrry
As long as there are other stores that consider my needs and give me bags if I require them to take items I have purchased home I could not care less what one store does. They would not get my custom if they did that so they lose that little bit of business.

Germany is well ahead of the pack - in German stores there is an automatic machine near the door, and each plastic bottle has a bar code. The machine scans and crushes the bottle and issues a voucher for the returned deposits.
spidermike007
This is an ENORMOUS baby step, in bringing Thailand into the 21st century, and beginning to create an awareness of the environment, and perhaps the extreme degradation that plastic causes. A first step. Maybe it will get people thinking. Will compel them to re-use bags, and carry the more long term bags that many of us use exclusively. This will save millions of bags over time. Very positive, and kudos to Tesco for trying it. The need to establish respect for the environment here is tremendous. Not sure why so many people think it is ok to foul such a beautiful land. But, a baby step leads to larger steps down the road.

The storm drain covers were 100% blocked with plastic bags. They were everywhere. It was disgusting. I refuse plastic bags as much as I can. Just don't need one when buying only a coke at 7-11. wpcoe
Or, charge B10 for each currently free plastic bag used. Hit consumers where it counts: the pocketbook. On one trip to Tesco, the cashier bagged my items in nine bags. I rebagged them into three and left her to deal with the six used-but-not-used bags. Can you imagine a typical Thai shopper facing a B90 charge for bagging their items? Makro seems to do a bustling business without offering free shopping bags.

KhunBENQ
I am a bit confused by this "news". I have seen the "no bags" slogan in our Lotus store quite a while ago. ภูมิใจ โม่ใช้ถุง (I am proud not to use plastic bags) Nobody seems to have a clue about it , buit obviously there are misc articles/videos about this 20 bonus points for NOT using throw away plastic bags. The difference seems to be, that in this Phuket store they do not even have throw away bags. To me it seems, that in other Lotus shops you could opt for the no bags option? Would really make sense. This waste is ridicolous. Your a funny guy and so are those campaigning for plastic bags. Ill give you a hint, what is more renewable oil or trees ? What degrades faster plastic or paper. Then the first incident with hot soup.. laughable so an accident happens i bet i can find pictures of hot soup going through plastic. No need to think for yourself just believe anything anti green. But i did read one thing that was interesting, if that plastic bag area the size of Texas does not exists that is great news. Does not mean we don't need to ban plastic as it stays too long in the environment but its great news if true. But actually it does exist but not in the way it was portrayed in the media. http://response.restoration.noaa.gov/about/media/how-big-great-pacific-garbage-patch-science-vs-myth.html
