Popular Post Nibbles48
I was in town today to do a few things... as you do. During our errands, my wife pulled up outside a clothes shop and told me to wait and she would go in and get me a new pair of casual slacks she had noticed the other day. So I am waiting in the car, the wife is well informed of my size, and I usually trust her judgement on plain everyday clothes. Anyway, I am waiting around for 10 minutes or so, and decide to get out of the car for a quick cigarette, and see my wife standing at the checkout paying for the trousers. After she had paid (450 baht) she left the shop, and approached the car. The shop assistant glanced over and saw that I was a farang, and she literally came trotting out of the shop and demanded another 200 baht from the missus. The missus said that the trousers were marked up at 450 baht, and the money charged at the till was 450 baht, so why now 650 baht? The store assistant said, you have falang husband, so must pay falang price if they are for him. My wife translated to me and asked me what I wanted to do (My wife is no war as confrontational as me). I said give her the things back and tell her that neither we, nor any of our family will ever shop in there ever again. The trousers were duly returned and the 450 baht given back to the wife. Even her family are pissed off with this sort of behavior. There was another incident a few months back where the wife went into a b=beauticians for a quick 500 baht makeover, (I wasn't there) and the person working on her asked if it was OK to charge 1000 baht because she has farang husband and this is his money not yours. My wife actually earns her own money, needless to say, the wife never went back and never paid the 1000 baht. So even my wife is being targeted by these greedy people, just because she married a farang. Anyone else have a bizarre double charging incident that went beyond the pail?
Popular Post paz
Just for curiosity which town is this ? I'm convinced that these things also happens because foreigners allow them to happen, be that because they don't realize, or misplaced generosity (of the type, "Oh, 100 Bt is nothing to me! And this person works so hard!)

Popular Post Jingthing
Yes that mentality is widespread. All you can do is shop elsewhere.
Popular Post simon43
I can also retell a shocking case of different pricing for a 'farang'. A few days ago I went to the local hairdresser for a simple haircut that took all of 5 minutes. After completing the cut, the young assistant demanded 100 baht from me. However, her superior immediately interrupted and said '80 baht, farang only have little hair'. I guess that as I grow older, I can look forward to more 'farang pricing'. Popular Post Gsxrnz
OP - Firstly, why did your wife even pay the 450 Baht marked price for the trousers? She should have negotiated a cheaper price. Secondly, why didn't she tell the shopkeeper to go and euphemistically give themselves an orgasm when she was asked for the extra 200 baht? My wife wouldn't and doesn't tolerate that sort of <deleted> - to the point that she tells the vendor or service provider prior to the point of establishing a price that if they try and rip her off because she has a Falang husband, they better readjust their attitude or a thousand problems will descend upon their family. Jeez.....even I'm scared of her!!

When answered in the affirmitave, I would have said aint paying, handed her my mobile and said, phone the police.

She never asks for discount, if she is buying something quite expensive, she will always take her dad to do the bargaining for her, and he is pretty darn good at it. That guy has saved us thousands a year.
Popular Post Beetlejuice
Sorry, but I find this incredibly difficult to believe.I have had store and market stall vendors trying it on with me on goods that are not priced, but never in my whole 30 years in Thailand had anything so blatant as a store owner chasing out of a shop demanding extra money for priced up items because it was bought for a farang, plus how did the staff member at the beautician’s know the OP`s wife was married to a farang if he was not there? Unless this particular staff member had psychic powers?
Popular Post Ulysses G.
Sorry, but I find this incredibly difficult to believe. That is because it is a load of crap. I've been here a long time and no Thai is going to lose money to make some imaginary point. They may try to charge you more in the first place, but not refund money and make no sale at all to "get" a farang after something is already sold. Water Buffalo
Its just plain racism. I have never heard of overpricing so brazen though. Where did this happen? I wonder when the notion that just because we are foreign we must be rich will disappear? I am certain I am the poorest person in my building. I am also the only foreigner.

Surprise for you, a trouser deal is not worth a lie - ever. She had 100 times your spine in saying things as they are: keep it.

Neeranam
I'd say it has something to do with the way you look as a couple. If it looks like the is manipulating the farang, then other Thais might try the same.
I Like Thai
Anyone else have a bizarre double charging incident that went beyond the pail? I'm from beyond the pale (Ireland outside Dublin and Kildare area) and I have never been double charged there for anything. I have been charged extra in Thailand though, but not in the circumstance you outlined.
Popular Post Jingthing
This case was an extreme example but it underlies the reality that the state of mind that sometimes leads to such extreme examples is not uncommon.
kkerry
Many years ago we experienced something like the beautician scenario when a girl running a clothing stall chatted to my wife in Thai, hoping she would get me to pay double the correct price for some clothing so they could split the difference between them. Result was a lost sale and one fuming wife

Popular Post moe666
I have never been double charged for something that is marked. Maybe for stuff that is in the market and no price but when I drop a few words of Thai on them and they know I am not a tourist it stops. I would have just got into the car with the pants and driven away, what is the clerk going to do, nada.
