Anti-govt protesters rally across Thai capital

Much has been made of the problem of vote buying (despite the fact that Korn and Suthep have suggested that cash to hand was not a factor in the last election).

Now back dere in t'maritimes buddy used to sell his vote for a half quart of newfie screecth. Why not?

Then along came a party from the watstelands of Saskatchewan- founded in part by immigrant farmiers- American socialists- ukrainian communists- the CCF (now the NDP- official opposisiton in the Canadian House of Commons).

Instead of screech they offered universal healath care- uinemplyment insurance- old age pension and gov't support for Buddys fishing project.

Of course there were many at the time who railed agasint these policies- 'communism' they shrieked- the end of the world, they howled.

But no polititian since has even dreamed of abolishing those populist measures.

Corporate welfare was the mode of the conservatives to offest populism- the tax write offs for the the corporations- the tax loopholes- populsm for the rich.

And in Thailand, we are seeing the same- a bottle of lao khao won't do it against the promise of agricultural subsidies (check out the subsidies to the American cotton farmers in the soutth).

As long as the mass of this population (mostly poor compared to the wealthiest 10 percent) have the opportunity to vote, there will be vote buying- through popular and populist policies- and if Canada is any indication- the country will be better for them.

Ditto.

It is hard to believe so many posters claim that there was anything democratic about Thailand's current election system of vote buying. It is very common knowledge that Phue Thai pays more, that is a big factor with the poor populace. I have not seen it hidden either, it is done in the open.

Without strong reform another farce election will simply put the same corrupt system back into place with 'promise' of reform. That is also common knowledge and is why the Dems said from the beginning that they were not seeking YL to step down and call for a snap election and is exactly why she did it anyways.

There's a lot of 'common knowledge' which isn't actually true. And what reforms do you think would achieve this corruption free paradise overnight? The same 'reforms' the army put in place in 2006, using 55 billion baht of public money, some of which was funnelled into the Peau Pandin Party which spent three times as much cash as PPP did in the NE in 2007 and still lost most seats it competed in. And this after a massive ISOC campaign to encourage rural voters not to vote for PPP. So much for buying an election...

Doesn't Suthep think it odd that only Bangkok folks are protesting, and only a fraction of the numbers he reports? It's amazing how little support this guy has.

I doubt that's correct. My wife's friend is going today and she asked my wife to go as well but I'm not sure if she will. They are from Isaan but are in Bangkok anyway. I know of others that have gone from Isaan as well so I suspect there are others and I know there are a lot from the south as well. I don't know about now but I'm sure I heard there were protests elsewhere in places like Khon Kaen.

Other provinces also having their own gathering protest.

Phichit Thai folks are at the Bkk too.

Yep, a coup is likely the real reason for the protest. That is why the PT have tried hard to keep it non-violent even though that is not their nature as proven by their previous protest. Also that is why the military constantly voices its concern over possible violence and now PT is really wishing the Dems would have went along with the snap election. Hah! Somebody is a lousy chess player.

Those who are posting on here in support of these protests might like to consider the sort of people they're supporting:

RT@BangkokLife: Thai woman shouting in English outside Lumpini Park "All Shinawatras must go" followed by "All foreigners should go! Thailand is for Thais!"

Not even that will convince some of them of the xenophobic, uber nationalism of this 'movement'

I have to admit that vote buying is one thing both the democrat and for thai parties do. And since both of the parties know that the act of buying votes will not determine the winner, so they opt to buy the winner instead. If you have been living in Thailand for some time, you should know by now that in each region, there is at least one or two prominent political figures and most likely they'll win the election in their areas. So Thaksin put this idea into practice. He knows he needs only 300 winners, so he'd buy the prominent political figure of each regions who are likely to attain lower house of representatives status into his party. By giving them each 20 millions, he could buy Thailand just under 6 billion bahts or under 200 million USD. Very cheap for buying a country, don't you agree?

Did you know that these same people were being offered 40 million per head to join with the Democrat coalition? Newin's Bhumjaithai party accepted the loot along with three cash generating ministries to run, giving the Democrats enough seats to form a government. The rest, as they say, is history.

There are close to 10 million people in Bangkok with no real distance to travel if they wish to join the protest, and we have a report of money being offered to attend......hardly a groundswell of opinion if you do the maths, is there even 1% turn out of Bangkok residents? I doubt it, as we hear many are arriving from the south!! then indeed Bangkok would appear to be ignoring Suthep

Forget it 473geo... You're not getting Thaksin back.

Not required, Suthep has the baht going in the right direction for me!

My wife is upgrading 50% of the rice seed next year thanks to the PTP subsidies

Life is good, for me.

But the outlook maybe not the same under Suthep and Abhisit for the Thai people, who appear to be heading back to the bad old days of feudalism, and the sad continuation of a hamstrung government.

Since she said 'must' for the Shins and 'should' for the foreigners, I would have to admit that with exception to the overly-inclusive word, 'all', in general, I agree with her.

The government has done exactly what they planned as far the snap election goes, but have turned it into a beneficial avoid violence at all costs show, good positive publicity, no live fire zones, no turning the RTA on their own people......

I say watch this space, it cannot be that PTP did not expect the Dems to no show at the elction, they have a history of just that......so what is coming next?

If it ever really happened at all, it is almost certainly in response to the recent fallout from the US support for the Thaksin regime and the reminder that the US embassy is not Thai soil. Coupled with the recent attacks on western media, and how they are biased against the protesters.

I for one am still supporting the protests because this shower of <deleted> need to go for the benefit of the nation.

Stop being so gullible.

Don't forget, even if true... blame the western press and the US ambassador.

Lol... One woman in probably 1 million + protestors is hardly an uprising against farang.

Now if there were a 100,000 people march against farangs, then you need to get worried.

If I thought that the public menatlity is ripe for this kind of skapegoating--- you betcha.

Maybe you have not personally witnessed this kind of ethnic skapegoating. I have. i know where it leads- and I think you do too.

This is an issue I wish i had not predicted on this forum afew das ago but part and parce wuth fascism is anti international/ist sentiment-

And after the 'revolution' is complete- and Thailand has been scorned and mo9cked by the international community- make sure you are carrying a translated transcription of your TV posts.

This s no joke.

Reminds me of Germany in the late thirties!!sad.png

You probably then had a few Jews, who in the beginnig supported Adolf, because they wanted change.

They got change allright!w00t.gif

I have often thought about, how the German people (educated and all) could be so missled??

And now we almost have a repeat in Thailand before my very eyes!! Sad indeed!

Even worse, that this neo-facist movement is supported by quite a few posters here.

I agree that PTP has been (is) a disaster for Thailand, and change is needed. But not in form of a movement lead by a corrupt old dinosaur!!

Sadly the protesters don't realise, they are just erandboys for the real elite!!

People tweet all sorts of nonsense which ends up being BS.

The anecdotal reports of Suthep's groupies are worthless. The photos show very small numbers of people. His "movement" has clearly fizzled out.

Sorry to p**s on your box of fireworks but ....

We just back from the Democracy Monument, leaving a 4 P.M., People a lot all around, coming and going. I see hundreds of buses and Vans, a lot prople from the South, but from Isaan too. More people coming than going, some people like us, stay only for a few hours, its foating all the time. I think, more than 500.000 people is a realistic number.

If you want see the different between the hired red mob from 2010, and these people protesting for reforms, you must look by yourself. I agree with this people, wich want to push away a corrupt Puppet Government that leads by a criminal on the run. Please dont boring me with this democratic-bla-bla. Taksin pay a lot of Taxpayers money for the votes and he have good oiled machinery for manipulate people. Open your eyes and look the reality, Politics is a Business like others, and Taksin is not "Santa Claus"...

500.000 people, maybe more on the road now, but there are more, much more...whistling.gif

Thank you for doing your bit.
