Australian govt awards scholarships to 17 Thai students
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- EACH YEAR, the Australian government offers Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships to high-achieving students, researchers and professionals from around the world to study in Australia's world-class education institutions, or to undertake professional development programmes. The scholarships are globally competitive and merit-based.

This year, 17 Thais were awarded with a prestigious Endeavour Scholarship or Fellowship. Five of these scholars will have the opportunity to study their full-post graduate degree in Australia, while the remaining recipients will undertake shorter fellowships or research placements.

The Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships facilitate the sharing of knowledge, strengthen mutual understanding between Thai and Australian scholars, and build international networks, which continue long after students have returned to Thailand. They reinforce the strong and enduring ties between Australia and Thailand.

The awardees will undertake their study or research at postgraduate and postdoctoral level, or in professional development programmes across a large number of fields including physics education, architecture, medicine and health, mathematics and law.

A further four Australians have also been awarded Endeavour scholarships to undertake their study at Thai universities. Of these four scholars, three have been awarded prestigious Prime Minister's prizes.

Applications for the 2015 round of Endeavour Scholarships and Fellowships will open in early April 2014 and close on 30 June 2014. For more information, visit: www.facebook.com/australiainthailand

Offensive/ Thai bashing post removed.

Will these scholarships be open to children of rich Thai families or only those from low income families.

Rich kids have parents that can afford an education visa.

Surely the less well off right?

Scholarships are based on academic excellence achieved within Thailand, not upon financial status.

If only this were true!

Absolutely everything Thailand has a price.

The applications review & granting of the scholarships are carried out by the Australian Federal Government Department of Industry; are you suggesting corruption is embedded in the process?

Congratulations to the students. This is the best way to open people to new ideas and experiences.

Good for Australia, great for the students and Thailand. thumbsup.gif

Sorry, I didn't phrase my initial post with enough detail. I doubt foul play was involved in the selection of the students who were granted scholarships in this case. I'm talking in general terms..

Corrupt! does the Minister for Education look corrupt to you?

Hon. Christopher Pyne MP.

Well one would think and hope so, but we living in Thailand all know how greedy the rich can be.

If this is correct, then all i can say is "That it is wrong" and i cannot believe that the Australian Govt would award these scholarships without a means test which they use for just about everything else including hard earned pensions.

There are many poor students who have achieved high academic standards, but who are unable to progress due to lack of funds, why should rich families get the scholarship benefit when their kids drive around in Ferrari's and BMW's.

There will be no corruption from the Australian side of the equasion. But the Thai side is riddled with corruption within the rich section of the population.

The applicant in Thailand must have already been accepted by an Australian Ed institution to receive the scholarship, so I would guess that alone indicates a certain level of 'wealth'. BTW this year 40+ Indians, amongst other countries, were also granted scholarships.

The Oz government policy reasoning for the program is as follows:

The Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship provides financial support for international students for up to 4 years to undertake a postgraduate qualification at a Masters or PhD level either by coursework or research in any field of study in Australia.

The Endeavour Postgraduate Scholarship aims to:

  • enable high achieving international students to undertake a postgraduate qualification either by coursework or research in their chosen fields of study in Australia
  • strengthen bilateral ties between Australia and the participating countries
  • showcase Australia’s education sector
  • strengthen mutual understanding between the people of Australia and recipients home countries, and
  • build international linkages and networks.

Surely the academic records and potential of the students should be far more important than the bank balances of the parents. Can you leave the politics behind and just applaud that these bright young kids are trying for a better future and Australia is helping them get a foot up...? Good luck to all of them for the future.
