PATTAYA: -- On Saturday afternoon, Police and Rescue Services were called to Jomtien Beach following reports of a Bus Stop which had fallen onto a foreign tourist.

At the scene, a large crowd had gathered as medics attended to Mr. Christopher Kristoffsen aged 65 from Sweden. He was unconscious after the steel bus stop sign fell onto him after the nuts attaching the heavy object to the pavement came loose.

The victim was rushed to Pattaya Memorial Hospital where his injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening.

That's a big sign. Hope the guy is OK.

They put a bus stop on Suk across from the floating market. Not sure why as buses just stop wherever they want, whenever they want. Driving by a few months ago I noticed it had fallen over. It was a very big structure, and you could see it was only set in about 1 foot of concrete. Crazy.

Bus stop sign - serving what purpose exactly? Wouldn't know about any busses stopping there, short of tourist dumpers dumping tourists, and baht busses parking at them... There are bus stops on Jomtien Sai 2, and the signs even have bus line numbers on them. Just no busses in sight, nothing like a schedule anywhere - future plans?

Looks like a typical case of shoddy workmanship... but for sure nobody is responsible for this...

Hope the Swede will recover and can enjoy the remainder of his holiday, stay away from street furniture here!

Sometimes the nuts are stolen to be recycled. The nuts should be spot-welded on.

determine why the sign became so unstable without anyone realizing

Keeping up with where buses actually stop takes its toll on bus-stops, I guess.

I don't think there are any buses!

It collapsed due to depression and neglect.

typical shoddy workmanship! probably cheap Chinese bolts that were stripped or nuts and lock-washers missing. Thailand is so dangerous it is unbelievable.

is that what old falangs in Jomtien (never been there or Pattaya in 30 years here) look and dress like in public?

No, that is how they dress when on the beach as one poster already mentioned.

They heard or saw the sign came crashing down and went to investigate.

I hope City Hall pays this poor guys hospitals bills and a nice compensation on top, not a good Christmas for him so far.
