He was an idiot but he sure came up with some good tunes, which combined with the keyboards of Ray Manzarek, the jazz tinged drums of John Densmore and the Spanish guitar influenced Robbie Kreiger, made for a unique and memorable sound. Timeless really. There were some great lyrics, imo- What have they done to the earth, yeah? What have they done to our fair sister? Ravaged and plundered and ripped her and bit her Stuck her with knives in the side of the dawn And tied her with fences and dragged her down But there were a lot of crappy ones too. Never mind, the music was/is still fantastic. The thing is though Ray and John were far out hippies, Jim saw himself as a shaman, the Lizard King, confronting the audience to break through their collective subconscious. It seems that Jim, like Nietzsche, believed in the Dionysus, embracing wine, ecstasy ( read take any drug) and chaos ( his challenges to audiences). And of course, the fool self -destructed. It seems he mistook the heroin Pamela had bought for cocaine, a fatal mistake. But the hippie movement went on without Jim, leading to the Green movement and eating organic, healthy food.
