Some type of weird fashion which started about a year ago.

They're actually key tags. I notice lots of Fortuner's with them on.

Google Car grounding strap pictures

they have been about for years at least 40 years, just the newer one, some have lights, or reflective strips on them.

in the old days was a black strip or some used a chain

if it's fitment was to be intended as a ground strap shouldn't it actually touch the ground ?

Yes should touch the ground. Ignis is short sighted.

I had a Mitsubishi Magna in Oz that was notorious for giving a strong zap when someone touched the door handle. Was freaking funny!

In the earlier centuries people cut scalps and ears and such stuff and hung around their necks. Same thing....

Before you chap's get into a long debate about this, reread my post.

It's a fashion, not clearly understood by most of us.

Still made in Thailand, otherwise tax would kill it. So it's not a Daewoo sticker but some other masochist fetish thing biggrin.png

They are not grounding strips, too flappy and don't touch the ground.

At first I thought they may be emergency gas release for LPG cars but how stupid would that be? Just think of all the fun kids could have going round releasing all the gas from any cars they find. w00t.gif

Maybe it is just as "Woodsie888" says "a fashion, not clearly understood by most of us" blink.png

They would not have to touch the ground. If static builds up to a certain level it can cause a spark to jump from a strap like this to the ground. Of course if there was loose lpg abouthit-the-fan.gif

The end of the strap will be closer to the ground during suspension bounces too.

I remember seeing these in the 80s and 90s and they rarely touched the ground.

Yes, 1mm is 1000V. So you need quite a bit of voltage to cover that 10cm. I say it's a fetish or voodoo thing.

About 2cm from the end of the strap and less if you take into account the bounce.

normally the carbon in the tyres should provide an earth but I do not know about modern plastics.
