PHNOM PENH — Negotiators for Cambodia’s ruling and opposition parties say they will meet on Friday ahead of potential talks between party leaders, in an attempt to end a months-long political stalemate.

Three persons each from the ruling Cambodian People’s Party and the opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party will meet at the Senate building in Phnom Penh on Friday, officials said.

Yim Sovann, a spokesman for the Rescue Party and one of its negotiators, said the opposition is asking for reform of the National Election Committee and for a recall vote in national elections.

“I don’t know the CPP’s agenda, but if they cannot accept our agenda, the negotiations are useless,” he said.

Prum Sokha, secretary of state at the Ministry of Interior and a member of the CPP’s negotiation team, said the ruling party wants an end to the political impasse that has continued since July’s national election.

“The CPP wants to have peaceful negotiations as soon as possible, in the interest of the people,” he said.
