Red shirts won't confront PDRC-led protesters: Nuttawut

The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Red-shirt demonstrators will not confront anti-government protesters on January 13, caretaker Deputy Commerce Minister and red-shirt leader Nuttawut Saikuar said Friday.

He said the rallies of the red shirts on January 13 would be held in many provinces, but not in Bangkok and its adjacent provinces.

To avoid confrontations with supporters of the People's Democratic Reform Committee, the red shirts will not rally in the southern provinces either, Nuttawut added.

He said the rallies would be held simultaneously at 9am at important venues in the provinces and on main roads. The rallies are being held to oppose a coup and to express support for the February 2 election.

The campaigns would have as their slogan "introducing the real owners of the ruling mandate and opening the door to the election", Nuttawut said.

In the evening, there will be panel discussions at three stages in the North, the Northeast and the Central region. Participants will include academics, representatives of selected professions and famous individuals from various walks of life as well as pro-democracy fighters and politicians, he added.

Jatuporn Promphan, a red-shirt leader, said the people who are against the planned Bangkok shutdown by the PDRC should come out to join the rallies

Not at all misleading was Jatuporn's statement? I thought they were gonna try do a Gandhi at the feet of baying yellow protesters by the sound of yesterday's article.

Given the Obama/ Egypt "democracy is as democracy does" article today me thinks they all have to go and show their support base in each constituency, rather than a big punch up in the city to try and break the road accidents statistic.

At least if they do that there may be some clarity as to who wants what where?

Ironically then at least whatever gets smashed guarantees (maybe) that the money that must be then spent on rebuilding goes back into your own community.... wink.png

This would be a very good idea, wearing a red shirt in the south would probably get you lynched, never mind actually protesting.

UDD asks supporters to join nationwide Jan 13 anti-coup mass rally
By English News

BANGKOK, Jan 3 - The pro-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD), the Red Shirt movement, today announced its anti-coup campaign across the country for January 13, the same day as the anti-government group plans to shut down the capital to oust the caretaker government.

UDD key leader Nattawut Saikua asked Red Shirt supporters who are against shutting down the capital by the People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) led by former deputy premier and Democrat MP for Surat Thani Suthep Thaugsuban to show their purpose and join the UDD mass rally on January 13 at 9am in every province--except Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani and Samut Prakan. But people in these provinces are invited to join the rally in other provinces.

He said the UDD campaign is meant to support the February 2 general election. He pledged that the rally will be peaceful and avoid any confrontations.

Mr Natthawut urged those who join the rally to not put on red shirts as the campaign will be driven by eligible voters wanting to cast their votes. He also invited pro-election elements to come out to make their voices heard.

For the southern region which is a stronghold of the opposition Democrat Party, Mr Nattawut said local residents will assess the situation as to whether or not to organise the January 13 rally for their own safety.

After the rally day, the UDD leader said the protesters can return home and follow the group's main rally stages in three regions - North, Central and Northeast - via 24-hour live broadcast in six satellite channels.

He said the group will also hand in letters to foreign embassies and international human rights body to clarify its move which opposes to the people's assembly proposed by Mr Suthep.

"No one has ever dared to challenge the people's power as Mr Suthep does today," Mr Nattawut said, describing the PDRC head's action as a "move which is not different from a coup. No matter you are a Red Shirt or not, no matter which party you support, we urge all of you to join the anti-coup movement."

"We want to announce that we are now ready to let the world know that our country wants the election to be held and is against all forms of coups," he said. (MCOT online news)

Guess the Reds will shut down the rest of Thailand whilst Sutheps mob will close down Bangkok... result!

The rat shirt please come to shut down Phuket, we have too many Russians and Mainland Chinese here!

Do you suspect these groups would fight each other?

Bad news for Suthep if the reds actually do that and avoid confrontation he won't have the violence he needs.

You've posted a lot of dumbass stuff but I think this counts as one of the dumbest. No one wants any violence and everyone on both sides of this conflict is breathing a sigh of relief that there probably won't be a confrontation.

You are seriously naive if you believe Suthep (and equally importantly his backers) would not like to see the government/security forces crack down violently, not least because it would allow the army/directed judges to step in and remove the Yingluck government.Unfortunately for them the government has been very patient and has won international approval for its approach.

The government is being 'patient' because they have no choice, the army won't back them. They have already said they 'would stand on the side of the people' if the police cracked down on the protestors.

.................Mr Natthawut urged those who join the rally to not put on red shirts.........................

So all the by-standers, rubber-neckers, passers by and onlookers on will be counted as part of the rent a mob.

The middle men can pocket in a lot more from the big boss from Dubai this way. Smart move.clap2.gif

Does that mean the days of the red shirts movement are finally over? w00t.gif

No, the fact is that these two groups do not usually care about any other people and that's the problem!

I don't think the army chiefs have quite said that though I agree their sympathies are with the protests. But even accepting your hypothesis that the government has no choice but to be conciliatory, that surely represents progress of sorts in the way political disputes are handled in Thailand.Equally I'm not sure the army has much choice but to be restrained given the disastrous experience during the last major Bangkok political protest under Abhisit. This is far from being a criticism of the army or the current government; they may have little choice but they are also (so far) being smart.

Instead of repeating the usual rhetorical posts from either side of the divide, let us be happy that there will hopefully and probably be no confrontation!thumbsup.gif

Whatever the reason for the reds change of mind really doesn't matter, as long as people will not get killed on the streers of Bangkok!

Maybe there is a small hope afterall??
