No time to search through old posts.

I want a reliable service with no line down problems.

In Bkk, who is the best please?

If I need to work from home, I need continous service. Not half day ok, then 3 pm on and off

cheers

Check with your neighbors, they are the ones that know, every neighborhood is different

Agree, also none of them are 100% reliable.

Since you need a constant connection I suggest getting a 3G dongle and suitable data package for when (not if) the main connection goes off.

Never even thought of that Langsuan, asking Neigbours. slap to forehead, not many will use in the day, but I'm sure they will know

Crossy are you the famous Crossy of electrical knowledge? I may well go for an emergency dongle good plan, hopefully they do a pay as you go one to avoid unnecessary expense.

seperatly If you are the EE Crossy any idea of where to get a proper electric wire connectors, instead of wire twisting, some lunatic has been at the wiring in my house and I just know they want to burn it down

Yes, it is I :)

You can fettle 'twist-n-tape' connections with wire-nuts, should be available from any electrical outlet, Homepro, Homeworks etc etc.

You can also get Wago push connectors here too, but you'll net to do mail order for them, no retail outlets that I've found.

Why not have a look in our shiny new electrical forum, here http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/forum/191-the-electrical-forum/

They may not use it during the day but their kids will

Thanks for the pointer to new electric site, I found your old info somewhere Crossy.

Back on track any recommendations for dongles? in Thailand of course, ease of use, getting it going ect.?

To echo comments above, none of them are bullet proof, all of them have inexplicable outages. I have a TOT DSL connection which is pretty good 'most' of the time and I use a D-Link DSL-2750U modem/router. Now this router has a unique Thai only feature, it allows a 3G USB backup to be connected, so when you do get one of those inexplicable outages it switches seamlessly to the USB modem.

Now none of this gets around the fact that a lot of the issues in Thailand aren't intra Thai problems, but the routing out of Thailand which affects them all equally

Posted

Gin Boy2 do you have a recommendation for your 3G USB backup? did you do research? or just get the first you found

is that router specific to TOT or would it work with other companies?

by routing out of Thailand as a problem is that due to going through US server first

For the 3G dongle I use True-H, their 850Mhz network is the most extensive, since DTAC & AIS have only recently begun deployment of their 2100Mhz networks, so they're a bit patchy. 850Mhz tends to be better for in house reception as well since it penetrates walls better. You can buy an unlimited Internet only SIM. I pay 899/month for 7GB. Now, unlimited is never what it seems anywhere in the world. You get 3G speeds up to the plan you have (7GB in my case) after which you get throttled back to something closer to 200kbps which at that point is 'unlimited'.

It's not TOT specific, should work with any of them

The routing out of Thailand simply means that Thailand as a nation has limited international internet capacity out of the Kingdom, so it can tend to be congested quite easily, especially evenings and weekends

Thanks for reply ginboy2, That might explain the regular 3 pm thing, perhaps lots of skyping to Europe,

I'm going to try and find a pay as you go sim for usb, if possible, since it will cost as much as wifi otherwise

Check with your neighbors, they are the ones that know, every neighborhood is different

What a horrible thought....

My neighbors think that their 20 meg connection at 600 THB is superior to my 5 meg connection at 2500 THB...

While they can stumble through youtube with the 20 odd buffers, I cruise through with ZERO... And still argue that they have 20 meg and are faster than me....

TIP...

Ask someone that knows about ISP's, not your idiot neighbors (not all.. just most)

For all you know the OP's neighbors may all be IT professionals. But you obviously need to increase your post count so go for it

For what it is worth, the dongle did it, and the true dongle kicked in when I had internet down ( due to transformer blowout of all things - so expect next post to be suggestions for cheap reliable generator). Dongle kicked in automatically then went off as soon as power came back on, seamlessly.

So thanks for tips all

ok. one more question, is it possible to get this true dongle on pay as you go, i just went through circular problem of expalining I already have wifi from true and dongle is back up, so I don't want to pay a monthly just the occasional use with pay as you go, but end up stuck in cycle of explaining and being explained to that I need package. so ginboy are you paying a monthly on your dongle as well as normal internet? or anyone else?
