Garmin Zumo 390LM (UK OS)

Featured Replies

I have just ordered a new GPS as above from Amazon.

Looking on Garmin's website, about the SE Asia street map (£99.99), it says not updatable, and will not have all features of same model with Thai OS.

Seeing as it will be mainly for use in Thailand, would I be better sending it back and buying one with Thai OS? Although I have looked on the internet, and cannot see this particular model with Thai OS.

I cannot read or speak Thai (yet), so would prefer my maps in English.

Another option: I will be in Chiang Mai in Feb. Would it be better to maybe buy the Thai Maps from EagleGPS? Would they be cheaper? Have more features?

Thanks for any help offered.

Seeing as how you will be using your Garmin Zumo 390LM (UK OS) with an English language map already installed, leave it alone when in Thailand. The English language map is what you are looking for, is it not? The Thai OS and accessories are available in Thailand, only in the Thai language.

InterestedObserver...Thank you.

Furthermore, It seems that Garmin no longer do a Thailand map. Only a South East Asia one at £99.99. Searching on ThaiVisa and the internet, I see there is a company ESRI that does a Thailand map that is reckoned to be the best. Anyone know how much this is? I have looked on the net, but cannot see a price.

Thanks

Phetphet,

I have just recently purchased the same Garmin Zumo 390LM. Mine was loaded with the Australian/New Zealand Maps & I was also under the understanding that only a South East Asia Map was available so I downloaded & am going to try it out on a ride from Bkk to Hua Hin this week.

I'm interested in the Thailand map though.. any idea when you might have a chance to try it & see how it goes?

Hi Saramsland. I have downloaded it, but now have to upload it to my GPS. Unfortunately, I won't have a chance to try it for at least another three weeks, as that is when I return to Thailand.

I think I read somewhere, (though I might be wrong), that it is based on Nostra maps Thailand, which if you have an iPhone, you can download for free from iTunes App Store. I'm sure others will correct me if I am wrong.

You should put the Thai map on a micro Sd card. Then to test it, first switch off the GPS. Go to the maps info page and select the thai map not the UK one. Then try to simulate driving a route in Thailand. If this works then you are ready to go when you get here.

I havnt used a Zumo but i am assuming it is similar to other Garmin devices, so go to Tools-Settings-Map-info and you should see your Thai map.

I have loaded the map onto the MicroSD card from my Mac, and these are the files I can see on the card:

When I connect the Garmin Zumo to the computer, I see both the Zumo and the MicroSD cards as two separate external drives on the Desktop.

However, when I go to Settings>Maps & Vehicles>My Maps (it does seem a bit of a different way to your suggestion), I can only see the pre-installed European Map.

Was I correct in copying all those files onto the SD card? Or should I have only copied specific files?

Is there anything else I am missing out?

Thanks for your help.

You only need the unlocked English version.img file. Create a "Map" folder on the sd card and put it in there. You might need to rename the file "gmapsupp.img".

I see you have also downloaded the patched JCV file. Create a "Garmin" folder on the sd card and in there a "JCV" folder then put the patched J014709.JCV file in there.

All the detailed info. is on the site where you downloaded it from.

surat04... I have now got it working. I did ask for, and get some help from the site that you mentioned. Thanks very much for taking the time to explain it to me. :-)
