If I were to buy walkie-talkies from USA (FRS & GMRS types), can I operate them in Thailand? Do I need a license? If I need a license, where do I go to apply? I live in Chiangmai.

On a general level

All radio transceivers used in LOS have to be type approved by the PTT
Imported units have to be submitted to the PTT for testing before being cleared by customs

As already mentioned the frequencies used by FRS are not allocated for public use

Use of FRS radios in LOS can result in arrest and appearance in court.

FRS & GMRS (462 & 467Mhz), Yes just like in Europe, totally illegal.

Electrical place on ground floor at Big C Hangdong (not Home Pro....go to opposite end of the Mall) has the Red and Black ones, starting under 2K. . Don't even think about using anything that is not approved, it may be confiscated and you may get booted out.

Is there any way of purchasing a frequency for commercial use in a certain area?

We tried using the common thai ones before but every channel was packed with Thais chatting away. If prices were reasonable wouldnt mind a private channel.
