Im in Chiang Mai and would like to stay another year here after returning from NZ in Dec.

Currently doing the dreaded monthly to Mae Sai. And I dont want to continue doing that. I see in the paper I could apply for a 12 month visa for approx 8000 baht at the local lawyers office. Could I apply for this visa without the lawyers help and save some money or is it quite specialized? Can this need to be done in Penang and Singapore or NZ?

The other question is if I cannot apply for the above visa, whats the best option as Im not of retirement age, I dont have 3 Million baht to invest, Im not married to a Thai, and no job here. Im currently living off my savings for now,Would the 2-4 entry tourist visa be best, and if so which country to go to?

How much is the visa?

How many nights stay? Ive been to the Singapore consl, but Ive never known about the muti entry tourist visa before.

It would be helpful if anyone could step through the whole process for me.

thanks in advance

The lawyers do the visa process if you meet the qualifications. You do not.

A multi entry tourist visa (up to 3 entry) and valid for entry during a six month period seems to usually be available at Penang. The cost would be 3 times a single entry I believe or about 3,000 baht (but not sure on the price). You go, submit application either in person or through a visa service to the Royal Thai Consulate in the morning and collect the next afternoon (after 2 PM).

You can apply anywhere there is a Royal Thai Consulate (part of any Thai Embassy) and if you do so in your home country you might even be able to obtain a multi entry non immigrant O visa (but that varies with Consulates).
