Hypothetically, if I bought a 300,000 baht Mitsubushi Lancer from a tent today then tried to sell it back to him tomorrow, how much would I be likely to get? In other words, what cut do the dealers make from the sale of used cars?

I don't know but I think a more important point here is that these oceans of tents with cars sitting idol are the main reason for the inflated price of second hand cars here. Thailand is a small enough market that these tents can hugely influence second hand car value by buying up all the available used cars. This market is also protected by the strict import laws.

Tents make most of their money from commissions given to them by finance companies.

The interest rates are outrageous but it's mostly the desperate who have no other means to get finance.

They are ruthless.

Yes, but you have to sell it to collect a commission.

Cars sitting on a lot costs money.

They do sell them.

If they're selling the cars, then the cars are not sitting idle.
