Cambodia cleans up visas

PHNOM PENH, 29 January 2014: Cambodia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on all embassies and consulates to accelerate visa application procedures and end all “unofficial” fees.

Foreign Affairs Minister Hor Namhong said the government would crackdown on corruption related to the issue of visas.

The standard, 30-day single-entry visa to Cambodia should cost US$20, which includes a US$5 processing charge if completed online, according to the ministry’s website.

According to a Phnom Penh Post report, the ministry spokesperson Koy Kuong said: “The directive was intended to allow speedier entry for tourists and potential investors, who can also spend US$25 to apply for a one-month, extendable business visa either from abroad or on arrival.”

Details of illegal practices were not explained, but there are allegations of graft mainly at overland border crossings and to a lesser extent involving some embassies.

“It was issued to remind embassies to process visas as quickly as possible and not to charge fees for ‘faster processing’ of visas,” the spokesperson said. “There is no official fee for speeding up your visa processing.”

Cambodia grants visa exemption to Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia, member-nations of ASEAN and is cooperating with Thailand to offer a two-country visa applied for at embassy of the first point of entry.
