I would be curious to hear from anybody who owns/has owned the 2014 Colorado 2.5l or 2.8l model.

Best way to put the question......thumbsup.gif

To be honest a test drive does not reveal all, just the basics.

Yep, anyone out there that has one AND can tell the OP the truth...........whistling.gif

To start with, how would you answer these questions?:

- Can you compare its quality of ride and power/passing-power to any other 3.0L pickup?

- Have you traveled on mountainous, highway roads with this pickup?

- Do you have 4x4 and if so, have you driven in this mode?

- How would you describe its braking?

- How would you describe its fuel economy?

- Have you installed a diesel performance chip?

- How is its navigation system?

- What brand and size tires?

- What color is it?

Posted

My questions would be regarding:

  • ride comfort vs. other pickups
  • wind noise/adequate sound proofing at high speeds
  • seating comfort for long drives (4+ hours)
  • adequate air con
  • down time/reliability
  • durability
  • overall rating vs. Toyota, Ford, Isuzu, Nissan
  • Is the 2.5l/160hp a good engine, strong enough for everyday commuting (no towing/light-medium loads), or is the 2.8l a must have
  • What were some of you 'pet peeves', what bothered you the most about the truck
  • Would you buy again

Thanks in advance vspin134!

- Ride and power/passing-power to any other 3.0L pickup?->>>> Chevy had harder ride than many due to vehicle sits on higher chassis. Navara had more comfortable ride (owned for 4 years previously). Passing is great when turbo kicks in.

- Have you traveled on mountainous, highway roads with this pickup?->>>>Chiangmai-Pai (twice a month), Chiangmai-Bkk (once a month) i find ride is harsh on empty load especially on twisty Pai roads.

- Do you have 4x4 and if so, have you driven in this mode?->>>> not regularly just once or twice in muddy surface but always in 4x4 mode in rainy season on twisty Pai.

- How would you describe its braking?->>>>breaking is sedan like - excellent

- How would you describe its fuel economy?->>>>5 star rating on this one considered size, weigh, and power. Chiangmai-Bkk (consume 3/4 of the tank...in city is not bad either - you fill it and forget it)

- Have you installed a diesel performance chip?->>>>No

- How is its navigation system?->>>> 2012 model did not come with Nav Sys - I used my iPhone Garmin for that purpose.

- What brand and size tires?->>>>standard size. Toyo highway Terrain on my second set (I replace every 40k for all vehicle I use)

- What color is it? ->>>> black (another highpoint on this-i find that my black paint is always shiny...chevy must have applied some clear coat non static dust technology of some sort for this matter. I could be wrong but it always looks new too me unless in rainy season)

[*]ride comfort vs. other pickups->>>> smooth ride on smooth surface. Bumpy on bumpy road...drive seat lacks of support on leather. Far from perfect driving position if you are more than 175cm tall...you will be sitting too far from steering wheel - you end up reaching for steering wheel.

[*]wind noise/adequate sound proofing at high speeds ->>>>wind noise very good. Engine noise loud but that is powerful diesel engine.

[*]seating comfort for long drives (4+ hours) ->>>> see above driver seat mention. Rear seats give passenger headache on bumpy road.

[*]adequate air con ->>>> nice and cool with automatic climate control.

[*]down time/reliability ->>>> never goes wrong

[*]durability ->>>> built to last but not quite GMC professional grade.

[*]overall rating vs. Toyota, Ford, Isuzu, Nissan ->>>> Nissan for ride comfort with poor crash test. Toyota has robust diesel engine with much better resale value. Isuzu is king of Pick up in LOS (no one can differentiate you from vegetable pickup truck...but best bet though) Ford build decent chassis but lack of standard passive safety unless you have to go all the way to wildtrak. I like GM product and when I buy car I look at safety being number 1 followed by design but not much at all on resale value.

[*]Is the 2.5l/160hp a good engine, strong enough for everyday commuting (no towing/light-medium loads), or is the 2.8l a must have->>>>never tried 2.5 but I assume it should work fine for your use.

[*]What were some of you 'pet peeves', what bothered you the most about the truck ->>>> ride comfort both front and rear not too mention on long distance bumpy road or twisty Pai

[*]Would you buy again->>>> I always like GM products and I would buy again. BTW I just sold my Chevy truck a while ago (could stand driving discomfort...just bough Ford and happy with ride and everything but I feel fit and finish of GM products are better than Ford.

Anyway that's user experience... Deep down I still miss my Chevy but just can't live with that discomfort (everyone in my family hate those seat and ride so just had to get rid of it. )

I drove a 2012 Model 2.8 (yea not the same as the newer Higher Output version). Ok truck, a little noisy but what diesel isn't including mine. Na, the chevy is noisier.

Preferred the 2.2 bt 50 i drove as well over the Chevy - not sure why but personal taste. The mazda seemed to have more jump when I floored it but these were really short test drives. The ass-end of the mazda was skittish over bumpy roads at speed, albeit with no load.

We have a nice black one (chevy) in our parking lot 4door all blacked out looks quite ok. He added a few little touches like hotbits shocks.

sorry not really the answer you were looking for i know.

I was able to test drive a 'new' Colorado earlier today. The only model they had available for the test-drive was the 2.5L X-Cab (small back seat, not 4-door), with a 6-speed manual trans. This 2.5L was the one with the new spec of 163hp.

I have to say that I was very impressed with plenty of power, and the ability to accelerate quite rapidly for any urgent highway situation. Steering and manuverability was tight and exact. Body felt tight and sound-proof. Found a bumpy road. Drove like a truck without a load. Diesel sound was there but understated. Loved the added control of the manual 6-speed. Considering that they want almost 75,000 baht for an upgrade to the 2.8L...I don't think it is necessary at all.

I get the impression that this is...'a serious truck that is built to work', and is built to go the distance.

Glad that you enjoyed it. Totally agree on its tight steering making highway driving a breeze (best steering so far even Ford couldn't match it)

The 4-door will feel much different, much less 'a truck without a load'.

Thanks Steve. I'm reading that to mean that the 4-door will feel a little more 'car' like, and therefore smoother...yeah...?

How will it feel different it's still a truck? just has a bigger cabin.

Nope, the 4 door still has suspension to carry a load, so if no load expect nothing like a car.

Yes, it's not a sedan and will not drive or feel like one, but the 4-door version will feel much smoother, less trucklike, and no load will have far less impact on the riding comfort.

I have gone as far as doing total work on upgrading the entire westcoast suspension (front spring, rear leaf spring + front and rear shock absorber). My 4dr LTZ 4x4 absorb more bump but just not worth money spent on those modification. Much cheaper by putting 3-4 sacks of cement on truck bed for softer ride.

Why don't you search online for reviews/road tests for pick ups. Thats what I did 18 months ago when I was looking to buy. From what I remember the Ranger was credited with having the best ride followed by the BT-50 which was a bit firmer. I then went to physically have a look at Ford, Mazda, Toyota and Chevy all 4D. Chevy drove OK but I thought was a bit small inside. Toyota also OK but my overall preference was either the Ford or Mazda. At that time it was 6 months wait list for the Ford and 4 months (may be?) for the Mazda. But was lucky and through an influential friend got the Mazda within 6 weeks. Have to say so far can't fault it?

Not like a nice car, but the double-cab is a little heavier, and puts more of the weight on the rear, resulting in a nicer ride.

My pick-up drives and ride a lot nicer than a lot of cars I've had...

This is the sort of thing I mean. Just seen it on a Thai web page. Pretty sure its the American Toyo. IMO in looks alone it just p***es all over the current pickups. I want one.
