as already mentioned DVD Players and media centers do not work anymore on my 5 year old Compac.Registry reviver found 919 mistakes should urgently be repaired. Is it worthwhile to buy this ware?Somebody got experience?Maybe buying a new lap top would make more sense.

No! It's another another rogue registry tool. This vendor claims to have user awards from Majorgeek (fake), PC World (fake) and CNET (fake).

If you want a good registry optimizer, there are plenty of free ones out there, I.e. CCleaner, Slim Cleaner, Glary Utilities, etc...

Maybe that's why you're having problems. Some registry optimzers do more harm than they do good! thumbsup.gif

I don't know what operating system you're using. But with the problem you're having, repairing it or reinstalling the OS makes more sense than buying a new laptop!

You really should have someone who's qualified look at it. It's looks to me that it's definately out of your skill level.

Can you read a data disk in your DVD drive?

Not anymore

There is a really good chance the drive is buggered or just clagged up. If you've never cleaned it, look for a CD Cleaning kit, which is normally a "furry" disk with some solvent to gently clean the detritus from the lens.

If it's not spinning at all, take your computer to a repair shop and get it checked out in case the connection is loose; at least if it is broken you can either buy a replacement, or if there isn't one available, an external USB drive (they aren't expensive if you only want to play).

It might even be a drive belt or something depending how old it is.

And that's exactly why you should take your laptop to a computer expert! It's not your skill level to try to do any repairs. You could make problems worse. You apparently didn't read the pinned topic at the top of this forum:

Please read before posting.

The information you provided for possible cause and remedy steps of your problem of DVD Players and media centers not working is simply not good enough for diagnosis or good advice. The information I provided regarding registry reviver is readily available on the Internet! You had me laughing so hard when you stated you downloaded DVD's!

Google is you friend. thumbsup.gif

I use "CCleaner" as a free download prog and it works well for me.................and you can run it and SEE the problems, before you activate the "cleaning aspect" if you are not sure about it.

In addition it allows you to back the files up so if there's an error/problem you can re-install them.

Absolutely worth a try.

Your OP isn't very clear on what the actual problem is, and I don't know where you 'previously mentioned' it, but can you read the contents of CDs and DVDs and they just don't play the media, or do the discs not even appear when inserted? Can you hear the drive spinning when you insert a disc? Without knowing these answers it is difficult to give good advice.

Regardless, definitely a +1 for ccleaner, it is a great little tool that can solve a lot of issues, especially in a system the has not been reformatted for years.

Yeah I saw that, but I'm not convinced the OP is articulating things correctly, or even knows what your question meant

Does it show in windows explorer at all? Is it listed in the device manager? If yes it may just need a good cleaning (with some compressed air as well as one of the disc cleaners someone else mentioned)

To jump in on this topic. How safe is CCleaner ?

I have CCleaner installed on my PC, and when I do a registry scan it comes up with quite a few issues. Can I blindly select them all and click fix, or is there something I should watch out for ?
