Dusit Poll: People back talks between Govt. and PDRC

BANGKOK, 3 Mar 2014 (NNT) - According to a recent Suan Dusit Poll, people are in favor of the proposed talks between Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra and the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC)'s Secretary General Suthep Thuagsuban. They also think the talks will be successful if both sides have sincerity and are straightforward.

The poll says 65.56 percent of the people under survey back the talks, thinking it is the best solution to the ongoing political deadlock at the moment. The survey suggests 70.82% are confident the talk would end the conflict as both parties would be able to acknowledge one another's needs.

Several of the poll participants however are unsure about the proposed talks, pointing out that currently there are no date and time set for the talk yet. A majority of the respondents also believe that if both sides are sincere about their intention to end the crisis, the talks will be successful. Poll takers also favor the idea of broadcasting the talks live so that public members are able to directly share the issue of national importance.

Nonetheless, the respondents think both Mr. Suthep and Ms. Yingluck should take the talks seriously with sincerity and listening to each other's opinions. The poll showed that the greatest concern of people regarding the talks is the probability that both parties would not be able to come up with a peaceful solution.

Ministry of Public Health warns of 3 serious diseases this hot season

BANGKOK 3 March 2014 (NNT) — Public Health Permanent Secretary Dr Narong Sahametapat has issued warnings against 3 serious diseases during this year’s hot season: cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis A.

In order to help citizens protect themselves from infectious diseases, Dr. Narong has issued warnings against the most widespread illnesses that are likely to occur this hot season.

Referring to the Bureau of Epidemiology’s forecasts, Dr. Narong stated that the empirical 10-year statistics show this year’s infectious diseases will be spreading mostly through food and water from February to May.

The three most serious diseases include cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis A.

According to Dr. Narong, cholera may spread even more this year as the disease has an infectious rate that increases biannually. For typhoid, he reckons that there is likely to be a 10% rise in the number of patients. As for hepatitis A, Dr. Narong has predicted that there will be an increase of 30% in illnesses if the people do not take the necessary precautions in preventing the spread of the disease.

Department of Internal Trade to discuss selling rice through AFET

BANGKOK, 2 March 2014 (NNT) - Mr Somchai Soithong, Director -General of the Department of Internal Trade, has revealed that his agency is preparing a report on whether or not a portion of the government's rice stocks should be sold through the Agricultural Futures Exchange of Thailand (AFET). The report will be presented to Niwathamrong Boonsongpaisan, the caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce.

About 110,000 tons of rice, valued at 1.3 to 1.4 billion baht, out of 230,000 tons of bid rice is deemed suitable for sale through AFET. There have already been 16 offers to purchase the rice. An additional 200,000 tons of government stockpiled rice is to be sold through bidding on March 12. There are also plans to sell rice continually up to four times every month.

Additionally, Provincial Internal Trade officers nationwide have been instructed to survey agricultural prices to determine the impact of drought in several areas. Initial surveys have shown that some produce, such as lemons and summer vegetables, have increased in price. Meanwhile off-season rice yields this year are expected to be lower due to drought.

The Thai Rice Exporters Association has reported that rice exports in January 2014 totaled 696,000 tons, valued at 12.3 billion baht. The volume of exported Thai rice increased by 19.9% but the export value dropped by 0.9%. The top five nations importing Thai rice include Nigeria, the Ivory Coast, Japan, China, and the US.
