Maize farmers threaten to block Saraburi-Phetchabun highway

3-3-2014-8-01-58-PM-wpcf_728x413.jpg

BANGKOK: -- About 500 maize growers rallied in front of Phetchabun provincial hall today (Monday) to demand 78 million baht in overdue payments of their crops.

The maize farmers who came from most districts in Phetchabun appeared to be unhappy after authorities concerned had promised to use the same amount of money to pay their peers from Loei province who earlier staged a protest in Phetchabun.

The Phetchabun maize farmers contended that they should be paid first instead of the farmers from Loei.

The farmers threatened to block the inbound Saraburi-Phetchabun highway and to camp out at the provincial hall for a prolonged protest until there was a definite answer from the authorities about when they would definitely get paid.

The rally today was peaceful and no untoward incident was reported.
