Poll says no near end in sight to current political turmoil

BANGKOK: -- Ending of the current political turmoil in Thailand is not expected in near sight as rival groups could not resolve their differences, and no neutral person could offer to mediate.

The finding was from a survey by Dusit Poll which interviewed a total of 1,178 people nationwide of their expectations on the ending of the current political turmoil.

More than half of the people or 58.94% said ending of the turmoil won’t be in near sight but will take a long time because rival sides refusing to compromise.

The conflict is long standing and could not be resolved. They also viewed that no neutral person could be found and accepted to mediate the conflict.

They said politics is a matter of unending mass interest.

The poll said however 30.24% voiced uncertainty of the ending because the situation is volatile and there is no clear sign of ending in near sight.

Only 10.82% were optimistic that the turmoil will end soon, citing the easing of the political situation and reduced violent cases.

Asked on a question of why political turmoil in the Thai politics is dragged on so long, 57.62% said power struggle and personal interest are main reasons.

But 14.13% pointed fingers to conflicts, heated arguments, accusations, while 7.20% blaming disrespect of laws and weak law enforcement. Only 3.32% said Thailand is still not a true democratic country.

As to a question of their expectations of the ending of the turmoil, 65.33% voiced high hope for the ending so that the country could turn better to progress and development.

They wished that national unity is back to the country and a neutral person could be found to mediate and reach a solution.

But 34.67% voiced hopeless saying they did not see any clear sign to reach a solution as the conflict has been protracted and all rival sides thinking only of their personal interests. Besides they said the situation is becoming more intense.
