Hi Guys, hoping i can get some advice from the expat community - been married to a nice thai lady 15 years and we visit often but I know nothing of buying a car there and neither does she

Were looking to buy a SUV or 4 door pick up, eg ford, toyota, isuzu etc as were sick of not having our own car and not being able to travel much

We have 700k baht cash and looking to finance the rest - up to another 700k using the wifes sisters name

wheres the best place to buy ?- big city bangkok or smalltown thailand ( near phetchebun)

any deals going on at the moment ? - i heard you can get zero finance deals but enquiries at the local toyota dealer says its 2.8%

Were heading over there in 2 weeks so would hopefully like to get research done now so we can buy straightaway when we get there, if we can indeed do that.

any tips or pitfalls to look out for would be appreciated

and one more question - i hear there is a waiting list for a new vehicle - really ? I find it hard to believe but wouldnt be too surprised if that was the case !

Not sure where you are in Phetchabun province, but if near Bung Sam Pan (on R21) there are three dealers there, Isuzu, Nissan and Toyota.

The Toyota dealer had 0% finance deals advertised when I was having my truck serviced a week back now.

Plenty of pickup trucks there so should not be much of a waiting time unless you want a particular model with all the bells on.

Phetchabun City has far more choice with Ford, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Toyota & Isuzu.

I have had two trucks with finance, SCB and Kiatnakin Banks, they come around your house and thoroughly check you and wife out with finance, ability to pay etc. As long as you satisfy their questions, not a problem. My vehicles were both in wifes name, never worried me too much, others prefer it to be in their own name. Plenty of info on TV motoring forum on how that is done.

wife is from si thep - nearest dealers are in Lam Narai - toyota dealer there is offering 2.8%

I will get the sister in law to call the dealer in bung sam pan - i would have thought that the toyota fiance plan would be nationwide - obviously not

Why do you need to spend more than 700k? that buys you a nice car which is yours from day one. 0% deals from Ford at the moment but i also got a good deal from Mitsubishi. I couldn't have got any better going to Bangkok.

That makes sense to check out the dealers there in Lam Na Rai (Chai Badan). Mitsubishi, Toyota, Nissan there, plus an Isuzu dealership, but I hardly see any trucks in that place.

You could always travel a bit further, Lop Buri and Sara Buri are in spitting distance, again more choice, Ford & Mazda.

Chai Badan has some private garages/workshops there. A very good Kenwood place, put a top system in my Navara and when I sold it, they took it out and put in my Vigo - top blokes.

We took delivery of our Vigo Champ four door about five weeks ago. We had to wait over two months for it as we wanted the dark grey metallic, white or black were available immediately.

The order was placed between Christmas and new year at the Mini Motor Show in Chiang Mai. They were offering 40,000 baht discount and all the extras, bar, liner etc.

The finance is through Toyota Leasing at 2.7%. Before the delivery, the salesman just kept checking that we had the 25% deposit. We were concerned that the bank hadn't contacted us for income details and a look at our house but he said don't worry, the finance is OK....and so it was.

That was a quite different story from when we tried to buy a Colorado early last year. The bank rep came to the house, wanted financial details and guarantors...then they they said no.

we need to seat 7 (2 x kids, sister in law and the parents in law) plus i feel safer in a larger vehicle

I would prefer you scrape up the rest of the cash and buy something in your own name cash, which you can. thumbsup.gif.pagespeed.ce.dtxKiAJ9C7.gif alt=thumbsup.gif width=25 height=19>

ownership title isnt important - we have businesses and property in each others names so the car would just add to the mix

thanks for the advice mate - as it happens the wife has just got off the phone to the sister in law and it seems they are buying a new Fortuna at just under 1.5m bt - 2.8% interest, 50% deposit.

I told them i wanted to do research first and to speak to me before deciding anything but as usual its been done thai style - infuriating but i have learnt by now that protesting is futile !
