I like Street Pizza off Tha Phae Rd and By Hand Pizza off Moon Muang, esp the latter. Both use rustic, wood-fired ovens.

I tried this place the other evening was not impressed . I found the pizza to lack the flavor I expected .. For the price I expected more . From now on it will be the Dukes for brick oven pizza ....

Which one? There are links to two places.

By Hand looks very good, like something only found in Europe. looking forward to trying it.

Yes, By Hand Pizza looks interesting. I tried Street Pizza and it was good, but IMO no better than many of the other Italian style places (Da Stephnos, Girasole, Why Not, La Fantana, etc.)

Everything come from there or has been improved...what an Americacentric world.... sad.pnglaugh.png

A lot of time, these dishes have been "improved" by immigrants from the country that they originated in, using the ingredients that are available in USA. The Mission Burrito in San Francisco had mostly Mexican immigrants for customers in the beginning, but other races and nationalities started frequenting The Mission when they found out how good they were. From there, they spread to the rest of San Francisco, then California and then the rest of the country.

We went to the Dukes for pizza tonight. In 7 years I have not been disappointed with their pizza yet. The Thais in my family will not eat pizza anywhere else but the Dukes.

My Thai partner is the same... Sadly we must order the Hawaiian to really please him... I make a bi-weekly date to go khondiaw so I can order sausage & pepperoni...

Without meaning to offend , this kind of posting reminds me why I only visit Thai restaurants here. Go buy the ingredients for a pizza- mozzarella and parmesan cheese, maybe olives.... The pizza you make yourself turns out expensive but much better. I have tried a pizza in Chiang Mail that was more expensive than I would have paid in Switzerland and it was uneatable .

When having pizza at Why Not (and I usually have pasta instead) try ordering extra cheese. I think it's an extra 30 baht.

IMO the best pizza around Nimmen is at the Beer Republic. I recently learned that the Beer Republic is a chain after a friend saw one in Bangkok. I usually don't like chain plazas but it's the best pizza around Nimmen. When The Duke opens at Maya that may change.

Pizza Company, with the great sausage trimming! All a matter of taste, and that's mine.

1513667.gif

Pizza Company has been absolutely appalling the last few months. They have no idea how to cook a pizza. What I end up with is dough covered in tomato sauce after the assorted toppings slide off in one big sheet when you bite into a slice - that's not supposed to happen.

What I really hate about Pizza Company is how stupid they are. Before their pizzas really went downhill and they decided to stop doing lasagne and most other dishes, I used to order from them several times a month. Even after they had been to my house over 40 times, they still used to ask how to get there - a ridiculous company with ridiculous employees.

(Apologies for rant)

LOL - "Circle of Krap" - that would be an excellent name for their company / products. I forgot to mention that they can't make a thin crust either - recently it looks almost as thick as the crust on their deep pan circles of krap.

I think I made that clear :)

But actually, it's constantly asking where I live that really gets on my nerves and McThai used to do that too (until I stopped using them). Are they so stupid that they can't make a note of how to get to each customer's house on the account details that they store in a database? If you run a food company that specialises in home delivery, continually asking your customers where they live is pathetic to say the least.

Agreed - the best pizza anywhere in the world is from my kitchen, but it is a very, very expensive meal to cook if quality ingredients are used, and really, what's the point going to the trouble if you're not using the good stuff. Have to say that the big blocks of prepacked imported Italian mozzarella from Macro aren't too badly priced now and taste OK, but you have to have a big freezer. My bacon and salami usually comes from the 'reduced to clear' part of the fridge in Tops or Central Festival, also good sized freezer needed as it tends to come in waves. I had to buy tinned olives, but often don't bother as my husband doesn't like them. I've only tried restaurant pizza here once and there was around 3 pieces of grated (unidentifiable but not mozzarella) cheese on it. Assumed that was the norm so didn't try again, although I've been tempted after hearing all the good things about Dukes.

Are 'American' pizza's like the Italian ones? In Melbourne I once made the mistake of buying from an Australian restaurant and may of well had gone to Pizza Hut. I can imagine a lot of English people would hate proper pizza's as they would never have had a real one. My sister visited us and only had one piece of an Italian one, claiming it was too dry.

I have to say, you have obviously no clue about pizza. Perhaps you are used to Amercian Pizza like from Hut Pizza - that can be nice too, but at "Why not" you get original italian pizza, a lot of the stuff even handmade. As well the idea there is that you decide your topping yourself, your fault if you are cheap and only choose tomatoes and cheese biggrin.png so much more toppings to choose from! For example the rocket salad is great!

how can i be cheap? the pizzas are not cheap there.

i didnt know i had to order cheese to put on the pizza, thats a first, do i have to order tomato sauce and crust too?...your ice cream sucks too, its like eating sand.

...but thanks for the single miniscule piece of canneloni though, i was still hungry and found another italian restaurant a few blocks away.

Funny how people rave about the "great pizza" every chance they get. I think a lot of the posts are restaurants plugging their joints, or it's some thin French cracker thing.

Not the western pizza you may be talking about in the US from domino's.

Fact is, they can't cook western food here. Don't even get me started on the great "western breakfasts" with a couple pieces of cold hot dog as a "sausage".

I call them pizza crackers. Basically a crisp cracker with a spattering of cheese, some olives. In all honesty never tried pizza hut though, could be interesting, but way over priced.

I'll warn you about the couple mexican places by the moat as well. I gave up and just got used to local Thai stuff.

I don't think he has pizza, but Chez Marco on Loi Kroh, not far from the Old City, has fantastic Italian food, as does Beccofino's in the Nimmanheiman area, on the other side of town. Actually, I don't really consider pizza to be Italian food -- isn't that more of an American invention, kind of like chicken tikkia masala isn't really Indian food, but is actually something dreamed up in the U.K.

Actually, pizza did originate in Italy, and the pizza in Italy is fantastic!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pizza

Yes it did! My Italian friend told me that pizza is basically a salty taste - not too much so but not pineapple!!

Have tried them both once now, and agree they both serve decent pizza, with my preference being By Hand Pizza, though it does not seem to open before 17:00. In particular the dough at By Hand Pizza is nice.

So thanks for the recommendation, I would never have considered to trying to eat at By Hand Pizza without it, considering the appearance of the shop and its staff. Reminded me too much of a recent experience in Hua Hin, where I accidently noticed a restaurant with a "Italian Pizza" sign outside. More appropriately it should have said something like "Isaan Pizza - same same Italian but different". One slice of the pizza was enough for me, though my daughter was hungry and had a couple. Pizza By Hand was fine though, staff too.

Good to have some decent alternatives to the long drive out on Hang Dong road to Pizza and Pasta, which in my opinion is still number one.
